Help me decide on what caliber Savage bolt gun to get.
So I am in need of a bolt gun. I want to get a Savage model, only requirement is an accutrigger. I am undecided on caliber though. I have thought about .270, 30-06, and .308. My use for the gun will vary. I will use it for deer hunting, predator hunting, target shooting, potential "sniper" weapon.
I will start reloading soon, so I will reload ammo for it. That will enable a bit of variety in how I load a round for its use. My typical distance around here is anything from very short in the woods to a ways off if you get in the right spot, say over 400-500 yards. Ammo cost is of course a biggie. I would like to have a good stock of ammo on hand without spending a fortune. So what would you get giving the above criteria into consideration? Kent

There are only two real calibers to choose from.
.223 or .308 If you want long range and more power then the .300WSM I have a 10FCP in .308 now I just need to get out and shoot it. |

Ok, I see where you stand. I will have two AR's shortly so I would not need another .223. Kent

If you plan to handload, .308 is without a doubt the way to go. The number of loads, selection of components, and quality of information about loading the .308 is unparalleled.

WAY more options with a 30.06. And can be found in abundance anywhere in the world.

Are the 30.06 and .308 about the same when it comes down to it for handloading? Can you do about the same with either one? Kent

And they will have .308
And you can get .308 almost everywhere man lives on earth. The same can't be said for 30.06 .308 and 30.06 are very close to the same when reloading. Perhaps 50-100 fps difference at most with most loads. |

From what I have seen .308 looks a little more expensive for ammo than 30-06. I guess that would only really matter to start with though as I would reload. I'll let this go for a bit and see what the poll looks like. Kent

They will have .270, the 'red neck' round. An '06...a 308 will do everything it can do. A 270 is a good 'extended range' range calibre. A 308 is a good intermediate round that offers limited long distance shots for the 'novice'. A 270 is easier to take out farther. Personally, I like the 308.
BTW, .223 is what my kids and my wife shoot because it "gentler" on the shoulder.
