What kind of varmints are you likely to encounter while carrying said gun? For the two-legged kind, the higher capacity XD9SC might be better, especially if there is more than one (they are known to run in packs). But if you are more worried about mountain lions, feral dogs and such, the .357 is better. And if you have worries about bears, well then .357 is better than 9mm, but you're going to have to open your options up to larger calibers.
I voted .357/.38 just because I like wheelguns and where I engage in the activities you mention, I am more worried about four-legged varmints.

9mm only because of the amount of round you can carry in the gun. i have a snub in 38 s&w and like it very much

I carry a .357 mag snub nose everyday, but only carry the XD's sometimes. I voted for the snubbie.

I voted for the XD9sc because if I had one, I'd definetely love the carry it, but I will probably mostly be carrying my S&W 442 for now since I only have an XD9 service at the moment...
