Big dots are great because as the name implies, the front dot is big. Fast and easy sight aquisition. Beware, however, they do hang on some holsters because of the height (Blackhawk Serpa in my case).

I haven't owned either, but have shot both. I prefer the vertical pick-up of the Slant-Pro's.

Of the 2 I've only shot with the straight 8's. Personally, I really liked them. For me they were much fatser, and more accurate than the stock XD sights.
YMMV

Installing sights your self ?????
Has anyone tried to install aftermarket sights such as the XS Big Dot Sights ? I contacted XS Sights today and their procedure for uninstalling the original XD sights might include the use of a dremel tool with a cut off wheel to get them off ? They are installed by an hydraulic press at the factory. I've got a Dremel tool with the cut off wheels but I don't like the idea of having to use it. Any comments ????

hitch61,
I put them on my XD and all went well. The factory sights are a big, fat, green, hairy booger to get off. I used my gun mat, hammer and large punch and CAREFULLY whacked like there was no tomorrow. I kept my slide from getting marred (thankfully) and then put the big dots on. A bit scary, perhaps, but still a doable project. Hope it goes well. (you might want to have a gunsmith on the ready with a sight pusher, just in case) |

Neither - I have Trijicons on my XD 40 service, and like them. To be honest, if I were to do it again, I would leave the OEM combat sights. I don't do much low light shooting with the duty weapon. If you're not planning on shooting in dim or dark environments, Id skip them altogether.

Which kind did you get?
I would have voted for the Heinie Straight 8's, until I looked at the web pages for both them and the XS sights. After that, I'm thinking that I may actually get a XS dot (not necessarily BIG) for one or more of my pistols. I LIKE that sight picture, and the way they say to use it for close or distant shooting. It is pretty much exactly like I like to use brass-bead front sights on my rifle. |

that they (XS Big Dots) are actually slower sights for competition. I am essentially asking for the impossible when it comes to sights: tough, fast, working in day / night, and good for competition. So I am going to go with the Heinie Straight Eight Slant Pro Night Sights and then use the "Bright Sights Paint - see Bright Sights High Visibility Gun Sight Paint to add a little more color to the front sight to increase the speed. Look over the thread and see what you think. When I do it I'll send the XDs to Springfield to get the Carry Package with the Heinie Straight 8s. I am debating getting the barrel refited for match.
