One thing I did when I hurt myself was tons of research. Upon researching I found that instability was one of the tell-tale signs of a torn ACL. I didnt have that. Another thing, when I got the MRI, the first doctor had to have the results immediately so he called the MRI person and had them fax him the results, while he was waiting he looked at the film and didnt think the damage was that bad. He got the results which said "probable ACL tear". I got a second opinion and the other doctor looked at the film and he didnt see a complete tear either so I'm thinking I didnt really tear my ACL, or its not as bad.

The choice is yours but maybe continued rehab will do more to bring it back to full strength than surgery.

I've never been afraid of a knife and have several surgical scars to prove it. Generally speaking, joint damage like that I think should do just what you did. You tried the PT bit, it didn't work as well as hoped, and there is still damage in there. Go ahead and get the damage repaired to the best of the ability of the doc's today. It is more to stop future degradation than anything else. FWIW, I had my knee scoped in 84 and was one of the early scope patients in Ohio. I was back on my feet in 48 hrs w/ the aid of crutches and tossed the crutches in under a week. I'd had a small tear in ACL in a wrestling match, and some cleaned up some other damage from having been hit by a baseball that came inside at around 85mph several years before. You may only play at 90% of your pre injury level for the rest of your life, but that's better than watching it degrade over time.

hmmm...if you didn't completely tear the ACL I'm not sure how that changes things...I saw my MRI and it was completely torn off and curled in on itself...

Laz I had almost the exact same injury except I didn't tear my acl.

I tried pt and ended up with the surgery and was glad once it was done. There was no way I was going to get better with pt. Sometimes surgery is the only and best thing to do. Surgery isn't always the worst option.

Good luck. I did get a cool little video when they fixed my patellar and mcl.

I'm not sure he understands what you mean... He was a little confused with your question. Maybe if you could explain a little more?

Ligaments aren't like muscles, they don't heal.
