S&W 642 vs 638

What do you guys think? Should I go with a 642 (hammerless version) or the 638 (shrouded hammer)? I know a lot of people have the 442/642 model, but does anybody have the 638 and how do you like it if you do?

What about the 637? I know a lot of people claim that it snags on your pocket, but that's only because they forget to put their thumb over the hammer when drawing it. Your thumb should be the "shroud," IMO.

But anyway, most people will agree that this is a close-distance point & shoot type weapon where you won't ever need single-action, so the hammerless 642 seems to be popular.

The closed design of the 442/642 keeps lint and crud out of the working parts.

The shrouded hammer Mod 638 is riding
in my pocket as I respond. A constant
companion for over two years now.

Frenchy offers a good point of view.

However, I prefer the 638 because of
the DA/SA capability, which means it
can be cocked and de-cocked vs. the
closed hammer being DA only.

Both are fine machines, probably winds
down to personal preference.

Boy you're not kidding, I just got my 642 and went to the range yesterday. I couldn't hit crap at 21'.....little better are 10-15'. This is
definitely a up close and personal weapon.

Honestly, keep practicing with it. I'm not very good, but I can already do one-hole groups with it within 20 feet.

The gun is inherently very accurate, it just takes a lot of practice and trigger control to get it down.

hmm...I think I might just go with the 442 then. A buddy of mine might have one that he'll sell me at the "friend discount"

638 all the way. i just purchased one and love it. i love the option of the SA/DA and being able to pull the hammer back on the first round or any following round as well.

here is a pic of my recently acquired addition:

friend discounts are always good but if you have your right out opportunity to select, i would steer you toward the 638 for sure.

whenever you make up your mind, let us know what happens.

yeah, if he wasn't giving me such a dang good deal on the 442, I'd definetely look into a 638 as a more versatile carry gun. But with practice the 442 should do exactly what I need it to do in a concealed carry situation.
