Never had to draw, or even reach for it, but there have been a few times I've been glad it was there.

Same here. Never needed it, but reassuring that it's there. Had a couple of times that sketchy people were around that already had the wheels turning on what's going happen should I need it...

I've been carrying for the better part of the last 25 years (missed 6 years in the middle when I was overseas)

I've reached for and started to draw 3 times. Never completely cleared the holster or had to use it beyond that.

Twice the people involved saw me reach for it and changed their ways quickly. The third time involved a LEO apprehending someone near me and she never saw me reach for my gun, she had drawn hers and the perp complied immediately.

On the NEARLY USED it:

At a gas station on a Sunday, family in car. Drunk hispanic dude in white tank top (obviously sloshed, stumbles) comes toward my car asking for "got some spare change, dude?" I say, "sorry" as I ramp up from condition yellow to orange. He stops, then takes three steps towards the station's food mart.

Stops again, turns and looks right at my car, peering towards it after a glance at me then mutters "...nice car (which it was NOT) and nice family..."

I get the butterfly in my stomach...my family still has NO CLUE, and the doors were unlocked, which I've since resolved. Now we ALWAYS lock the car doors, even if I'm standing 2 feet from the car. Left hand on fixed blade knife, right hand moves off the pump handle, and hangs near my 9mm, concealed at 4pm IWB.

Drunk guy stumbles into store, his buddy, who was in their junker car 15 feet away joins him. I stop pumping gas and saddle up. By the time we pull out and l look back, he and his buddy are play-fighting back by their car.

I at least knew my back stop (cinder block and/or their car). Tests show that .32 Auto up to .45 will not penetrate THRU cinder block but it can enter one wall. ..no worries there. It was a good thing he was NOT between me and the traffic (4 lane, busy road) otherwise the "know your backstop" issue would have been WAAY more troublesome. I'm a believer in 2 shots minimum per threat, esp. if multiple targets come into play.

Was prepared to issue one warning or posture as to not give away my next move (which is harder to do than I thought), to buy time to enter my vehicle and leave. Was pretty sure the whole thing would have been on tape. It did not appear he was armed and he issued no threats, so I had to take no action other than leaving the premises when said drunk moved away. I wanted to tell him to f-off after his "nice family" comment, but was 95% certain that would have provoked immediate escalation. I know how my mouth got pretty smart when I used to drink a lot 20 years ago.

Glad I had another option. Glad I did not end up being in the newspapers that day. In my younger years, same situation with a gun or a smart mouth could have had a different outcome. Having a family and a cooler head makes a HUGE difference, don't you think?

closest I have come was at a cheap motel in 2005 (I think). I was walking from the car to the room and this wild pit bull comes running at me. I had a S&W at the time in my computer bag, stuck my hand in the bag to do the deed and right in the nick of time this fugly white chick comes running around the corner screaming at the dog. Apparently it was her dog that had gotten loose and out of control. The dog paused after hearing her long enough for me to distance myself and for her to get it back under control.

The owner never saw the gun, just my head sticking in the bag. It was clear to her though that whatever I had in my bag was something that I thought was going to stop the pit bull.

Side note: People with dogs that are vicious by temperament p'ss me off. And if you MUST have a vicious dog for whatever reason it must be kept under control.
