Being fairly familiar (multi-thousands of rds) with the M16/m4 platform i would go that way, esp for the "doomsday" theory. get a mid-short one for versatility with differrent sight options and get used to it. I would get whatever caliber is most easily accessible
as well. Shotguns might make cool sounds and big holes but ill take on anyone anytime just give me an M4 and an Acog.

Purchased my 1st AK recently. Have had shotguns, 7mm Rem.mag, 30-06 and several 22 variants. but after seeing Gabe Suarez video on Kalashnikov Rifle Gunfighting it made sense to me. It shoots sweet and straight after Jim Fuller got through with it and I am good out to 100 - 150 yards at this point. In my AO I don't anticipate needing more range than that. If so I can go to the 7mm to reach out and touch someone.
Short range or 150 yds, I will use the AK with back up of my xd

Soooo my vote is a mix... why not get an AK and a Shotgun... all in one--- call it a Saiga-12!! You can get your EBR and have shotgun versatility-before the ban.

Ar or Ak since you really have about seven months before the possibility of a new president taking them off the market

my humble opinion is that you invest in a nice bolt action .22

they're cheap to shoot, cheap(er) to customize, and infinitely more useful in a real survival situation, imho. don't want a .22? then i'd suggest getting a solid bolt action rifle in the caliber of your choice. nothing beats an accurate bolt action.

now if you're looking more for HD, i'd get the shotty first...
