...apparently I didn't read the original post.
If you want a gun to get before a possible gun ban then I'd get an AK and beg and barter to stockpile magazines.

keep an eye out for deals on combo shotguns like the mossberg 500. you can get it with the 18.5" barrel for fun stuff and tight areas and it has the 28" barrel for trap or hunting. you can find those combo's for less than 300$.
they are so fun to shoot also.

I would go with the AR. But get a GOOD AR not a cheap one. Stick with the name brand AR's though. The AR is much more accurate then the AK. I would like to have an AK just to have one, but wouldn't want one to shoot any further then 100 or so yards. You can go on Youtube and watch a video where they test them both and the AR holds a much tighter kill pattern out to 300 yards then the AK did. JM 2 cents

I too voted shotgun, IMHO, it's by far and away the most versitile of the mentioned firearms. They are relatively inexpensive, and you can mod the hell out of it, not to mention ammo for shotguns is still relatively cheap. It's the gun in my collection I shoot the most. Shotgunning is a "blast" (pun intended)!!!!

I have a bolt-action rifle... That way, I don't have to worry about being able to expend ammo too quickly.

I voted Other as it would be a bolt action 30/06 with a pump 12ga shotgun a real close second.

I voted shotgun because of the versatility. You can shoot rifled slugs, buckshot, bird shot, whatever all through a smooth barrel. and then you can easily change out a barrel and shoot sabots as well.
