One is a rifle and one is a shotgun...
Since only one is a rifle, I'll have to go with the Marlin.

i say the shotgun....there are so many different ammo options you can go with. #8 for scatter, 00 buck for more precise, and even slugs for down right damage...and not that i would use them to defend my life from people (maybe dogs) there are bean bags and rubber ammo.

I hate mosbergs. I have owned three and only one was reliable. I also don't care for pistol caliber carbines for serious work like self defense. I would recommend a good .223 caliber carbine or a good .308 carbine or even a 7.62x39 AK.

With respect there is nothing precise about 00 buck or shot in general. Also bird shot like the #8 you mentioned is a poor self defense load unless a rabbit is charging you. Slugs are great for precision and penetration power in a shotgun.

Whoa Tom...

You don't use bean bags or rubber bullets to defend against lethal threats. If the threat is one against your life, you should be thinkiing about something a lot more potent than bean bags.
