Home Defense

If you're in bed and you wake up to glass breaking, dog barking, or alarm sounding, what do you grab, why?

Shotgun :

Shotgun :

Why?

Larger pattern.

Lots of power,
plenty of potential for damage,
more accurate,
manual operation (little if any chance of a jam with a pump action shotgun).

I live in a 2 bedroom apartment, with one bedroom as my office. My wife is in the same bedroom I am. If I am sleeping she probably is too. I don't have any children so that negates my need to navigate my residence during a break in.

Grab the shotgun, hunker down behind cover, call the police, and cover the bedroom door with the muzzle, the door opens, assess the threat and start firing until the threat is neutralized.

I've heard the "I'd rather have a handgun because ......" but noone has been able to illustrate a situation that I would be in in which my shotgun would be at a disadvantage to a handgun.

No choice for "All 3"?

I'll generally grab a handgun, mostly because it is easier to maneuver in the house with.

I know you are supposed to sit and wait for the BG to come to you, but doing so puts my children's bedrooms as my backstop, so I do need to get out of my bedroom and cover a long hallway.

I've got a great hd shotgun but my pistol is easier to grab 'n' go and better suited imo to clear a home.

Hand gun because it has a light on it, I'm an expert shot with one, and my XD holds 13 +1(The whole reason I bought it) so with the two mags I have enough fire power to kill the intruder 28 times, like to be sure.......

During some Close Quarter Training, the handgun proved most effective with multiple threats and when hallways and corners were concerned.

handgun because:
- it is next to my bed
-I can shoot the hell out of it
-don't own a shotgun
-AR stays in the safe

Handgun is fastest access.

As soon as I get that out and ready, my wife grabs the shotgun out of the safe, so I know she'll be fine
