OK, I know this thread was originally about 9mm carry ammo...what are the professional opinions on 45 acp ammo?

I have been carrying 185 grain Gold Dots in my 45's. I cannot even recall why I ended up with the 185's versus the 230's.

Is the Federal HST considered top of the heap in 45 as well?

In 45 acp I strongly recommend the 230 grain loadings. The 185's will work but the 230's have better performance over all.

Here is the loads I recommend in order.

1. 230 grain Federal HST
2. 230 grain Winchester Ranger
3. 230 grain Remington Golden Saber
4. 230 grain Speer Gold Dot

You can pic the pictures of the 45 bullets out of here. The problem with the 185 grain loads is they are light for the caliber and their penetration is not always that great nor do they expand as large as the 230 grain loads. They are not bad just not as good.

When I carry my XD-45 I carry 230gr Gold Dots, basically because thats what the gun store recommended when I bought it.

Alaskapopo, thanks for the info.
I'll pick up a few boxes and run them through my carry guns (both 9mm and 45) to make sure that they'll run properly.

In the case of shotguns you could have lots of different ammo on tap, Buck, Slugs, Bean Bags, Pepper Poppers, Breaching rounds etc. But the decision to switch ammo should be a conscious one not something that is out of your control like when you stagger the magazine.

In handguns unless you have some AP pistol ammo there is little point in having two different types of ammo. I will say I am thinking of this from a LEO and CCW standpoint not from a military one. I can see uses in the military for alternating tracers with ball or AP depending on your needs. That is out of my realm however and I will not speculate further.

I wrote a long reply to this. A quite nice reply I thought. Hit submit and the G$% D&^$^&* fricken database went down again and I lost the entire message!! Well I am too lazy to figure out what the heck I said and retype it so suffice it to say that I have replied to this but you didn;t see it.

Send a note to Federal and ask them! I'm sure it is no highly guarded secret. Report back when you have the answer.

I just got off the phone with a Federal ATK representative and he says that HST doesn't stand for anything. He also added that Federal had kicked around several names but they didn't want to add or subtract from their other brands.
