When you call, remember: NAME, ADDRESS, "shots fired", send POLICE, send AMBULANCE, wait for confirmation, then perhaps add what you are wearing, and hang up. If shots were fired, next call is to your lawyer. Get safe, secure your weapon, then SHUT UP. And do NOT touch the shell casings...EVER. A grand jury will not look lightly on this fact. If you acted in a legitimate way, most of the time, the facts will bear it out. Still though, better have a good lawyer just in case.

Good advice to be sure.
In the one case where I actually had weapon in hand, I did call the police immediately. It wasn't so much to protect myself as to alert them to a danger as a couple of young rednecks were running around town in a mud-covered pickup truck targeting motorists late on a Friday night with a laser beam.
This was back in the days when portable laser beams came in two varieties... tactical lasers on guns and presentation pointers that cost about $100. There were no little $5 cat toy lasers back then. So getting that little red dot on your body was a terrifying experience to say the least.
And putting that little red dot on a driver almost got an idiot punk 357 magnum reasons why that was really, really stupid and dangerous.
