SHTF Pistol Ammo

I reload 45 ACP for my XD, and for some time have wanted to load some designated and kept aside for emergency situations. I use moly coated bullets for practice, but I was wondering what people would suggest for a SHTF stash. Would you reload or would you buy store bought (for leagal issues of using handloaded ammo). Either way, would you use lead/coated, FMJ, or JHP?

As far as personal thoughts, I'd rather have a big stash of handloaded, and I say screw legal issues. If I have to use that ammo for that kind of situation, I think facing leagal problems of using home made ammo is the least of my worries. I have not loaded any JHPs, but I've been thinking about it more and more. Any thoughts?

I have all of the above available. Mostly store bought FMJ.

If the S hits the F I'll use whatever I have available.

I'm loving my new Cor-Bon 185-grain DPX's. I clocked them at an average of 1078 fps. They boast 475 ft/lbs (not too shabby for a 185-gr...) Not to mention the gelatin tests we did through my XD45c -- it expanded to almost double the size and penetrated a little over 9 1/2 inches. I think I found my new (and only) .45 carry ammo...

That's what I figured. If stuff is going down bad enough where I need stockpiled ammo, then I'll be happy with almost anything. That being said, I figured I'd have something effective (JHP), but cheap enough to have a bigger quantity (reloading it). I'm a fan of Golden Saber, but at a dollar a round, I don't really want to have large quantities of store-bought... but I may just go with something cheaper for stockpiling.

The Winchester White Box JHP's perform pretty well.

If you handload, the cost difference between plain jane JHP's and FMJ isn't that much.

I found an old 500 count box of 240 gr Speer JHP''s for my .44 mag sitting on a dealers shelf that where cheaper than the copper plated lead bullets.

I voted store bought, but I actually buy my Ranger Talons from my former dept. Great price, plus it's a better round than the SXT round.

Handloaded is the way to go, for me at least. I can start stockpiling ammo at 8cents a round which means its more cost effective to practices with and leaves more money for other items.

FMJ or JHP whichever you prefer. If the shtf, you'll be happy to just have ammo that works when you need it.

With the fact that the majority of firearm related deaths result from blood loss the FMJ is a better way to go, that way you get two holes per shot.

Two holes is the way to go but I still want an expanding bullet. Go with factoy jhp. I pick up a box of Fed. 9mm+p 124gr HSTs about once a month for $23.95 and I have a nice little stash of serious ammo. Shoot tons of fmj for practice. I don't trust handloads for serious work. I don't care who's doing the reloading. that's just me.
