SHTF - What will cause it?
Personally i think it will be the defaulting of the U.S. dollar, and i foresee if happening within 12 years. I just don't see any other way it could happen as fast and unexpected as the U.S. defaulting on our massive debt, and the ensuing worthlessness of the dollar.....which would mean we couldn't import oil, which would mean our industry is wiped out......which means we'd be unable to get basic necessities. That being the case, robbery, rape, murder, and just out and out anarchy.....would become the norm. It would happen extremely quickly too, like......within a week.

Right, but the dollar itself didn't default..........it couldn't, it was backed by gold.....which is no longer the case. (and no, i don't wish this to turn into a Ron Paul debate).

Apathy. Idiocy. Dissolution of culture. Dissolution of work ethic.
Nothing will erode our country more quickly or more aptly than these. [begin rant!] Americans are slowly becoming more and more interested in safety, security, and their products than they are in their inherent rights. A recent poll found that 20% of students at NYU would be willing to trade their right to vote for an iPod touch....anyone else see this as a disturbing mirror into the "gun buybacks" staged in cities across the U.S? Similar studies across the US show that a good portion of Americans don't understand their God-given liberties, their criminal justice system, or even know the men whom they should hold accountable to the drastic changes that are being made to these all-but-sacred ideals. How do you convince a man who does not know what his rights are that they are worth fighting and dying for? He does not know liberty...he has never seen freedom. If he had a desire to learn he may have some romantic ideal of it, portrayed through a poorly written, politically correct, biased history book. If he's lucky it will have been lectured to him by a worn-out wits-end discipline-neutered babysitter employed by a collapsing school system more concerned with improving non-citizen's self esteem through bi-lingual support groups than with their student's intellectual well being. A system whose only answer to it's inherent lack of ability to produce functional constituents and consistent rate of failure is "give us more money and we'll do better". Then you have the politicians who pander to the masses by tossing a bone to the fractured education system with pork-laden spending bills. Like a cage-tender tossing candy to a dancing, obese, and diabetic orangutan at a local zoo. It isn't helping him much, as a matter of fact it's rotting him from the inside out, but what the hell it keeps the masses happy and as long as they keep coming back for more who cares....right? Even then, if he's emerged unscathed and semi-functional from this broken system intended to turn him into a citizen and a man he's ladened with legal pollution that strips him, or more appropriately fails to allow him to exercise his liberties. You can engage in free enterprise, but you have to give half your money to people who don't want to work. You can defend yourself, but not with a gun, and not in a way that might hurt someone else. You can say what you want, but you'd better make sure it doesn't offend anyone. You can have a house, but federal agents can come kicking in your door at any moment to make sure you're not a suspected terrorist. So once again I ask you...how do we ask that sort of a man to fight for liberties that he's never seen and has only read about romantically in tales of struggles of patriots past? It's simply a foreign thought to him, a philosopher's dream. It's as preposterous as asking a man to lay down his life for the benefit of calculus, or existentialism. So you want to know what will destroy America? Cause the shiz to REALLY hit the fan. A slowly increasing body of uneducated, unprepared, apathetic Americans who are so disillusioned by their bloated, self serving government's inability to do anything even MILDLY productive that they're willing to sell the very essence of their being, and the struggle for which so many brave men have laid down their life for a price tag of....oh about $299.98 at your local Wal-Mart. Buy-in now folks. Right now you might get an iPod touch, tomorrow it will be a pack of juicy fruit, and after that you might not get anything at all. [end rant]

I understand the difference between not having money and it being worthless. However, in the short run, the end result on society is one and the same. Regardless of whether it's worthless or you just don't have it because of economic conditions, you won't be able to buy what you need.
I suppose this wouldn't be a bad time to buy some gold bullion |
