Which should I get...

Ok, I've wanted both for a long time, and I'm starting to save up - but the question is, which should I get first?

This purchase is strictly intended for taking to the range and having fun; though I also view this as an investment toward SHTF gear.

So what are people's suggestions? AR or AK?

(The household collection already includes several shotguns, blackpowder, hunting rifles, handguns and a Mauser - this would be the first assault rifle)

AR for the main reason that it is more modular, more popular, and (IMO) way freakin' cooler than the AK.

Seriously, the AR is never ending fun. There is a limit to what you can do with an AK because of the limited number of aftermarket parts. You'll find no end to the weird stuff people make to be bolted onto an AR, though.

Were I in your shoes, I would go AR without a doubt.

AK. Relatively simple construction; unmatched reliability in inclement environments; parts, mags and ammo available in 2/3 of the known world; when the Chinese invade you can resupply off their dead and keep fighting.....

AK's are designed to be very simple and reliable.
ARs are designed to be accurate and reliable.

I like accurate guns.

Get a .308 version of an AR. Take it hunting. Use it as a SHTF rifle with a little more umph than a .223!
