I was wondering about LEO guns. Can an LEO carry virtually any pistol if he or she paid out of pocket? Or does it have to fit a certain criteria that you get through the department?

Completely depends on the individual departments. Some require officers to only carry department issued weapons. Some let officers carry their own so long as they qualify with it and it meets departmental guidelines.

Thanks for the input.

I hate glocks with a passion but I will say this they are reliable as hell and have been tested and used on a much larger scale in about every condition sandy freezing cold hot as hell wet air dry air and evrything in between and work. until the xd proves itself in all those aspects on a much larger scale I dont think they'll ever be considered for military. I love my xd and i feel it is just as reliable if not more than the glock, unfortunatly glock has been around since the 80's thats a hell of a long time. as far as LEO XD's are already out there and I'd say gaining more momentum every month. the m9 no comment until I get a chance to fire one myself.

Do I think the XD will make it as a military issue pistol? I think it could easily survive and perform well in combat, but SpringField Armory is just too far behind the curve to make the sell to the Government. Another issue is the gun is made in Croatia and not in the USA.
When Beretta got the military contract one of the stipulations to that contract was they had to open a plant in the US and actually build the guns here in the states. It's a good guess that SpringField Armory would have to do the same thing.

I think if the military ever decides to go with a Polymer replacement the S&W M&P has a good chance of getting onboard with the military. It's an American company and the pistol is starting to prove itself every bit as tough and reliable as the Glock plus the M&P gives you the ability to fit different sized shooters and adapts on the fly to the mission. Also keep an eye on the new Sig Sauer P250 with it's interchangable calibers, grips, internals, etc.

The problem right now is the military has all of these M9s and to go and outfit the military with a brand new pistol would cost tons of money. Money we don't have right now because we are in the middle of two wars on two fronts.

I unfortunately agree with Seawolf. Too many LE Agencies have fully invested in the Glock platform. Given all the discounts and parts availability plus all the Glock armorers in the LE field, it's unlikely that the XD will be as common as Glock in the LE community. And the Military is the same boat with the M9. This is all of course MHO!!! All the same I personally went with the XD and I couldn't be happier!

No matter how you feel about Xd's or Glocks you have to admit no matter how you argue it the XD does not provide a significant enough of an advantage to justify switching all those guns. Personally I prefer the Glocks to the XD. But I prefer the Xd to the Beretta.

I am on the same boat as most. I think the XD is completely capable of being a perfectly reliable issue firearm. That being said, I also don't feel SA has enough push to do this to make it happen. Plus alot of gov agency's are really stuck on the manual safety's. Which is really stupid. Now that the 45 is offered with a safety I can see more potential for small scale LEO carry, but not army.

The only people stuck on a manual safety is DOD. The FBI, ICE and pretty much all the rest of Federal Law Enforcement use Glocks, Sigs, or HK's all without manual safeties. The same is true with local and State leo agencies.
