The M9 is not a bad pistol. Not my first choice but if it has Beretta magazines instead of the low bidder Check Mate mags the military went with later on it will run well. The Beretta is a accurate and reliable sidearm.

Our local Sheriff's office as been all XD for a couple of years. The guys I have talked with wouldn't switch back for anything. The road guys are all carrying .45's. Not sure about the rest.

I've got the Glock Digest book at the house and IIRC there is a 9mm rental glock in there that has reportedly gone for over 3/4 of a million rounds. I'll have to double check that when I get home.

First of all, not all departments "issue" guns. Only those with a sufficient tax base can “issue” a gun which means the department buy a bunch of guns for issue.

Now will departments issue the XD? PDs will only issue XDs when they have the money and the need – when they have to do it!

Many PDs (and SOs) have authorized weapons lists where they authorize guns that an LEO can carry provided he/she has qualified with it. The XD is already approved by many departments including mine.

Now the XD is out with an external thumb safety. Maybe it will pick up sales with LEs and compete for a Mil contract?

Possible but not likely IMO....but not for shortcomings inherent to the gun.

It will not have any chance at replacing the Beretta until the 9mm has a manual safety. Ya have to understand how may firearms stupid people there are in the Army and how scared the rest of us are of them.

I don't understand all of the bad talk about the Beretta. My former dept. has used the 92f (same as M9, right) since late 1989. They also issue the 92fs, which has made it easier for the small hand people. The gun is very accurate IMO.

Yeah, there is a notice about the cracked locking block and some cracks in some of the slides. Our locking blocks were replaced as soon as the problem became known. I liked mine so much I bought it when I retired and have put thousands of rounds thru it with absolutely no problems whatsoever. Nada. Nothing.

I don't think LASD will ever authorize the XD or Glock unless they come out with an external safety for the 9mm. A few years ago they tested the Glock for off duty use (I don't know the model) and decided not to since it didn't have an external safety. The range people told me the dept. didn't feel the deputies could be trusted with it basically. I found that odd since the dept. had used revolvers for about 140yrs. before that and they have no external safety. That is what I was issued when I got on and I never shot myself, anyone else or had a ND.

Most of the bad talk about Beretta came from the Military using the lowest bidder to make replacement magazines for the M9. The checkmate mags did not work well and gave the pistol a bad reputation with soldiers.
With the proper magazines its a fine weapon.
