Help Me Choose b/t these two:

I'm going to buy my first handgun (after months of research). I joined the NRA, bought and read 10 books, joined (and go weekly) to the local gun club and plan to purchase in the next week.

Here are the details: This will be an all purpose gun, CCW, HD (until I buy an 870), Camping/hiking protection gun. I want to carry IWB whenever possible and am looking at the Milt Sparks, Bladetech, Comp-Tac products.

I can shoot a .45ACP with confidence and will select that cartridge (over 9mm). I don't want to sound like a jerk, but money is not a problem for this purchase. I've narrowed to XD Compact .45 or the HK USPc .45.

I've only shot the 4"XD.45 and the USPf .45. Loved them both.

What would you pick if you could only have one for the purpose I've described above?

I personally would go with the XD. It is a great pistol, ultra reliable and accurate. I'm sure the USP is too, but with the money you save, you can spend more on ammo and practice...

They are both great pistols. The XD is my favorite and I've already bought 3 of them (2 compact XD45 models), one for IDPA. I'll probably sell the Service as I'm lovin the compact.
The nice thing is the XD is cheaper and you can get a wicked trigger job if wanted, and it would still cost less than the HK.
I like to think the holster selection is better and cheaper for the XD.

I voted for the XD as well. Just seems more versatile.

I voted for the H&k. Both are great guns. I had a XD45 and a XD45 Tac. I liked them both alot. To me the H&K 45 compact is one of the finest handguns ever made. Smooth recoil and its fits my hand great. It will cost you more to buy, but the chances of you ever getting rid of it are slim.

XD45 in compact - versatile, you can run larger mags for competition, but smaller for CCW. I suspect you can get an XD45, get a carry trigger job + good set of sights, and still be ahead money wise.

I chose the XD because I got as good a gun for a lot lower cost. The USP is more versatile with many options relating to the trigger action and safeties but the XD more than met my safety needs so HK's options simply made it hard to choose which variant to select.

I don't like the exposed hammer. It can snag on stuff. Things can get interposed between the hammer and firing pin. If I wanted an exposed hammer, I would have purchased a Kimber Ultra Carry or the like.

Also, the USP's round in chamber indicator is not tactile and is useless in the dark. The XD's is superior and safer. The XD comes with a loader, mag holder, extended mag (compact models), and holster. USP does not.

I felt that the XD Compact had fewer forum reports of failures to feed and other gun mischief than the USP Compact.

Lastly, I have never seen an XD do this...

http://www.thegunzone.com/glock/hk-kb.html

It may have happened, but I never saw the report and that helped push my decision to go with the XD.
My $.02.

Money no object, I'd probably get the HK.

But you really can't go wrong with the XD either, and this is XD Talk.
