I hate idiots including poll
Went to the range a couple of times this weekend. Took a friend, made him read the safety rules (said he had only fired a gun 3 or 4 times in his life) and since I get tired of punching holes in paper, went to a range where you can shoot cans etc.
This range is about 50 miles from the house, but having a little more freedom for rapid firing and such it is kind of nice. So we are on the way and I notice the old gas gauges says we need a $50 cocktail to make the round trip. So I decide to stop and grab some fuel and told him to grab a bag of ice for the cooler. I rarely think a lot about what others might like, but this time I did and I had MD, coke, coke zero, sprite, water, and apple juice stocked up for the day. He comes out and I grabe the ice from him and notice a brown bag! The idiot has a 16oz beer he is planning on drinking in my car on the way TO the firing rage! He actually asked me three times if I was serious about him not drinking it and storing it in the trunk until we get back home. I told him point blank, "drinking is a fun hobby and shooting isa fun hobby, you enjoy them seperately around me" and he just kind of looked at me like I had a hole in his head. He decided to toss it into the trash can after I told him he would either go home and drink or come to the range. Yes, I know it was "only one beer" and I have little doubt that I could not shoot safely after drinking only one but then again since I never have, and I have left range areas where folks were drinking there is no way I will back off it. I am including a poll to see if I am over the top or not on it. I likely will not change my position on it though, keep those two hobbies totally seperate IMHO.

Alcohol does not mix at all with many things. Shooting is just one of them.

i'm not going to vote because i have a couple of stipulations...
i'd say absolutely no drinking at the range...you're risking others as well as yourself. as far as sorting brass, as long as the live ammunition and the firearms are separate, fine by me to have a few. same with cleaning firearms, as long as the ammo is way out of reach, then fine. |

Drinking at the range....No.
But if I had a few beers with lunch, and then went to the range, I feel that I would be competent enough to handle that. No everyone reacts to alcohol the same...Know your limits. I htink the general rule of no drinking at all when firearms are involved is due to the few ruining it for the many....Hey they still let people drive after they drink (within reason). Its all about being reasonable. |

Shooting with alcohol in you is a big no-no. First how did you get there? Drive? Then your going in and loading a firearm. Your a danger to yourself and others do to impaired judgment and reaction time.
I would think it wouldn't be to good to drink and sort brass. Yo might end up with some bad brass while your eyesight is blurry. You could always check later and correct a mistake like taking bad brass for good. But why waste time later.

If someone had a little 'accident' at the range and I was injured, i MIGHT sue for my medical bills.
If someone had a little 'accident' at the range and I was injured, but that had even one beer...I'd sue them for neglegence and at least 2 million. Alcohol, painkillers, muscle relaxers, etc do not mix with firearms at any time. Heck, last week I was at the range and was standing for at least 3 hours. My back and neck were starting to kill me, but I didn't take any medications out of respect and safety for others. When I got home, it was a nice Contin cocktail. |

+1 That sums it up for me too. I expand it to include irresponsible firearm handling. I've had friends that have gone with me to the range and were irresponsible with their handling. I'd point out the issues (muzzle pointed all over the place, etc) and get the patented response "it's not loaded..." I no longer shoot with them. And I will never go shooting with someone that a) has such a lack of discipline that they cannot get to the range without drinking alcohol first, and b) lacks the brain cells that a rational person possesses that says...'drinking & firearms don't mix'.
