Brass in Range Bucket.... Take it?
Ok, Ok... Here's my deal.. I want to start collecting my spent brass for reloading.. I went to the range today and fired 150 - 200 rounds of .40SW.. Afterward, generally I sweep up and dump in the range brass buckets.. Today, I dumped it in my range bag.. As I did I noticed the bucket had 100-200 of .40SW in the bottom from the previous shooters... Do you take it, or do you leave it for the range to bag & sell?

My range does not sell it, so I take whatever I find. Some people will pick theres up and leave it on the table for whoever wants it.

just ask and see if they care, at my range they love for you to take whatever brass you can. i was told "whatever you take, i don't have to pick up"

I dont usually shoot at the range, there is plenty of open desert for me to use. However, when I do go to the range, I typically just keep my own brass and quickly glance thru my casings and throw any of my rejects into the bucket. That way I can make sure every casing is once fired and I dont have to waste my time with a lot of rejects at home. I dont spend a lot of time sorting my brass at the range, but if I notice rejects as I pick em up, I toss em.

I sell all the brass I accumulate to the local scrap yard. Got $ 1.85 per pound for the last load. Ain't getting rich, but the money helps to feed my XD habit.

I'd probably leave it. It's not exactly larceny, but it can't be good Karma.
The thing that bites my ass is that indoor ranges are so particular about selling/reloading the members spent brass, I'm told I can't shoot certain 'non brass' cartriges. I mean, I'm a paying member! Just because they don't want to have to sort out brass from aluminum or steel doesn't mean I should be forced to shoot brass only. I'm not exactly a cheap SOB, but if I get a good deal on Wolf, I'm gonna buy a few hundred rounds, especially with the price of metal, gasoline, and member dues going up. I crunched some numbers and realized it costs me over $120 to drive down and shoot apprx. 250 rounds of pistol cartridges. Ok, I'm just ranting now, sorry |

So many people at my range reload that the buckets are usually empty or full of 22s.
When I shoot Blazer I sweep just the non brass and toss em. I do pickup whatever brass I find while waiting for the range to go hot or when I need a rest. I am becoming a brasshole now that I am getting into reloading. The recent IDPA and 3 gun matches have added to my stash. |

The poll is a little misleading in the title...the title asks whether you take it from the bucket. In my mind, I consider the bucket brass to be the range's brass. But any brass on the floor that I sweep up, I consider that to be up for grabs.

If it's already in the bucket it's the range property. If you're sweeping it up then you can take it. My range has about 10 open topped 55 gallon drums that have sorted and cleaned range brass lined up to the left of the bucket. What's the difference between taking the brass that's in the bucket before sorting and cleaning and taking the brass in the barrels that have already been sorted and cleaned?
