Sub Compact - 9 or 40?
I currently have a XD45 and a SA 1911 Champion Loaded LW. I'm thinking of adding a SC next. I'm undecided as to whether I should get a 40 or a 9. I realize I could go 40 and then get a 9 conversion. It seems to me I have heard of some cracks on the 40's in the past is that still a problem?
This new gun will probably end up being my daily carry. I think I'm leaning towards a 40 with a conversion for range time. I'm just a little hesitant due to the cracks. Any Input? Anyone here ever experience the 40 cracking issue? |

Is there a 40 to 9 conversion barrel for the subcompact?
I think if you have already spent a lot of range time with the XD 45, you won't have that learning curve with the subcompact. So, an argument could be made that you wouldn't have to shoot the xd40 as much as somebody completely new to the XD. My XD-9sc was my first XD, and my carry gun, so I've shot the living daylights out of it and still do. I never want ammo prices to stop me from practicing. I just bought 1000 rounds of 9mm Blazer Brass at 7 dollars per 50. I'm not sold on the idea of conversion barrels because of the unique way different calibers recoil, which is something you depend on for accurate follow-up shots. For a carry gun, I think it is important to practice with what you are going to carry, including shooting your actual carry ammo as much as your ammo budget allows. If you slow fire at bullseyes, you can stretch out a box of ammo for an entire range session. But, for a self-defense gun, I think it is very important to do a lot of double taps and 3 in the chest 1 in the head type drills. I can go through a box of 50 very quickly that way. So, my way of stretching out my ammo is doing a little dry firing at the range between every few mags, and working on quick sight acquisition and trigger finger control.

I don't think there is. I've seen several replacement barrels but no coversion barrels. I could be wrong, so keep looking.

9mm. Controlability. And mostly ammo costs.

I'm not too concerned with ammo costs, as I have a 550B and could get set up to load either pretty easily. I have never fired a 40 before though. How does the 40 compare to the 45 ACP or 9MM when firing?

I don't own a SC, but want one. I want one in .45 ACP though.
Since you are use to shooting .45 ACP, I wouldn't think recoil from a .40 should be too much concern. If they don't have that within the next year, I'll consider the SC .40. For me, the only reason to consider 9mm is ammo cost, since you arn't concerned about that... |

I just shot my xd9sc for the first time yesterday and i absolutely love it!!
I also shot a 40 sc and there is a noticeable amount of differences in recoil.much easier and faster target aquirement with 9mm as opposed to 40. and also as already mentioned price of ammo is less. |

Buy both!! Use the 9mm to practice and the 40 to carry.
