Have you ever had to grievously harm or kill another person?
So, the poll today might touch on some nerves.
Let me say at the beginning that if you are emotionally, legally, or logically uncomfortable with answering, by all means please do not. If you wish to answer anonymously this is more than acceptable as well, simply do not post and only vote. This subject has interested me since I first stumbled upon it. I know many of us carry, one can hardly deny the many plausible reasons for doing so in today's dangerous society. I also know that many of the individuals here are Military men and women and Law Enforcement Officers whom I thank whole heartedly for your hard work and your steadfast dedication to ensuring peace and prosperity within our nation and our cities, states, and towns. Anyway, I am interested in how many people have actually been in a conflict with potentially mortal consequences for either side. I will be the first to say that I thank God I have not, and I pray I never am faced with the decision to allow myself or my family to be harmed or to kill another human being. I have been in frightening situations, and one that probably would have ended quite differently had I had a gun at the time (I'll explain later in this thread) but I have never been in a life or death conflict with another human being. Anyway, to those who choose to participate, thank you. - Ryan

Nope. I've had a few confrontations with people who were either high or just plain jacka$$es, but things never progressed to the point of physical violence. I consider myself fortunate, but I still intend to carry daily (just in case).

Im not a leo and i have grievously harm 2 individuals. It was clear self defense but it could have been prevented. short version. My background im very experienced in jiu jitsu. Last new years around 2am after a good night of partyin my friends and i decided to walk to the corner mexican restaurant to grab a late snack.
This is where i think it could have been prevented on my side. being drunk and walkin thru a bad neighborhood at 2am was my fault. we got a block from his house and some gangsters started yellin at me and 2 of my friends we kept walkin and acted like we didn't hear them. They kept yellin and ran up behind us. They accused us of being some taggers that jumped them the previous week. my friends and i continued walkin backward as to not give them are back they continued after us. This is where things went bad at this time only 2 of the gangsters/wannabes were in front of me and 2 friends they continued to make threats and we continued to state we are not the guys ur lookin for and were tryin to get food leave us alone. At that time this guy takes his shirt off we back up again. he flinches at my friend with a raised fist. i thought it was a real punch comin and i barely held my fist back as i flinched towards him. He exact words "what homie ur goin to swing on me if i swing at ur homie" my exact words " we don't want to fight but if u swing im goin to fuK u up" not the best words but by this time my blood was goin i didn't feel walkin away was workin and the moment took over me and i tried to over intimidate him. i thought it worked he turned around picked up his shirt and then turned back around and sucker punched my friend the smallest guy with us! i immedately hit him back knocked him down on the ground my other friend took the other guy down. being on the ground is my world drunk or not i those of u that know ufc i was on top of him in his open guard he had a half ass guilitine choke. i passed his open guard to full mount released his choke and caught him in a quick reverse armbar as he sat up. i've nvr used my jiu jitsu n real life but feelin an arm break and hearin them scream like there hair is on fire will stay with me a while. i then jumped on his back as he knelt clutchin his arm i put him in a choked looked over at my two friends one had the guy in a similar choke helps to teach the buds jiu jitsu, the other was kickin him i saw the blood poorin from the nose of my friend which had been sucker punched. Got me pretty emotional and i droped some nasty elbows the back of the guys neck. this all happend pretty fast but i had broke the guys arm and knocked him out from my elbow strikes i yelled for my friends to run because there buddies were not far and i didn't want ne leo's thinkin we had jumped these two being 3 on 2. Basically we got very lucky and were saved by our trainning and workin as a group. I nvr walk ne were ne that area alone or at night. we were very fortunate they were not carryin any type of weapon. sry for the long story.

I am ex-military, but during time of peace. I have never been in that situation in my life, and hope that I never am.
I have, unfortunately, eye-witnessed two murders. Hope to never see that again or be in that situation.

May I suggest the book, "On Killing" by David Grossman.
Probably the definitive work on the subject.
