When Does Death Occur?

New question...this one may be a little more metaphysical for some of you.

For those of you who believe in a soul you can relate to death occuring when the metaphysical soul leaves the physical body.

For those of you who do not believe in a soul you can relate to death as legal termination of life, I.E. your next of kin or other willed individuals now have entitlement to whatever you previously owned.

Correct! When the body is no longer able to adequately perfuse the tissues. Every person that has died have died from some form of shock. Of the 8 different types of shock one (or more), is responsible for their death.

Okay, my quick, Biblical answer is when the lower functions cease. In the Bible, we have the description of the "breath of life" and not the "thinking of life" (Gen. 2:7). "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Intelligence is certainly a nice thing to have and is a distintive feature of human beings, but some people come into this life unable to think on any order high enough to be considered alive by some modern standards. Does this mean they should be terminated? No.

Neither should they be unplugged if they have the sense permanently knocked out of them later in life. It is not truly permanent, if one considers the afterlife. Also, my studied opinion is that it is better not to plug such a one up in the first place if it can be avoided. Let them die naturally. That requires some thought, planning and family discussion before such an event ever occurs, though.
