"spend what ever and I don't care if she knows" to me means that I know what we can afford, and I'll spend it if we can afford it. As long as I keep the bank balance in the +, she doesn't look and doesn't care. On the other hand, if she puts the balance in the -, she doesn't look and doesn't care. Double edged sword I guess.

Well, any toy worth more than a hundred bucks I will be excited about and would be talking about it with her anyway so as such I wouldn't really need to "ask permission". Then again Ms. N is pretty darn special because (among other things) she likes the same toys I do. Case in point, even though she just got a 357 Mag she just said as I was typing this that a .40 seems like a good choice for our next gun so we can shoot both major and minor. I was not nearly so blessed in past relationships.

27 years into 3rd marriage both of us are at the point that we know we would notspend excessively without some discussion, but I have been known to purchase things first and then discuss it, but it has never become a problem. She collects stamps and coins ( expensive stuff ) and I shoot and buy guns ( yeah more expensive stuff ) but at this point in life we can afford it most of the time . LOL

Reading the topic made me think of what my fiancee says all the time... "You might wear the pants but I bought them". See, I don't shop. Not for clothing. So she ends up throwing out some old things (I don't usually notice) and then buys new ones, which I usually like. As for big expenditures... as mentioned above it comes down to a discussion. But rule has it, that I can't buy another gun until we get a gun safe.

I find men spineless who need "approval" to buy something. "consulting" is another thing, its respectful and considerate.

I have bought seven guns in the past three months, exceeding $5,000 total. She has no clue, nor does she need to. She still wears the pants, because I am afraid to tell her.

We discuss things mutually, but we both have our own "hobbies" and so buy whatever as "needed". If I ever feel guilty, its only because of the need to balance spending with responsibility - which is why as I buy stuff, I'll almost always sells stuff to try to offset.
