Barrel....to polish or not?
Should I polish the barrel on my xd? I like the polished look but yet at the same time I also like the look of the black.

For me it was a no-brainer because I have a bi-tone and the black barrel just didn't look good on it. It didn't match, and it didn't mesh well in my opinion.
If you have a black gun, or if your gun is always being carried and generating lots of scuff marks anyway, then it's probably not worth it. Even the black ones look better with a polished barrel in my opinion, but it may not be worth it on a dedicated carry piece that you'll have a hard time keeping beautiful anyway. The polish job requires maintenance though. Be forewarned. It's not a once and done thing. If you want it to stay smooth and shiny, you'll have to touch it up with some polish every now and then after heavy range sessions because the barrel will inevitably get marring and surface scratches on it from the slide under fire. Additionally, you'll have to make a commitment to keep your gun clean & oiled just as a protective measure against any possible rust issues. If you think it's worth it, and you know you can keep up with the maintenance and not get lazy, go for it. For the record, mine has not shown any signs of rust to date. |

Black wears off on the hood, so I like to polish them there.

Why? Aesthetics? If it pleases you to look at a Polished part on your pistol then do it. I just don't want to see you guys polishing the locking contact areas, that's all. Remove to much metal in the polishing process and you could hurt the reliability of your pistol or change your point of impact. It may not happen often but this is one of those "Disclaimer" things you guys need to start posting with you little "How too" or "Improvement idea" threads. Some people might damagage their pistol and become quite angry about it. Personally I don't feel it is neccassary to do this, but we know what Patches O'Hullahan feels about "neccassary".

TKOL, You can easily remove the finish without damaging the gun, and you can damage the gun if you get overly excited in your efforts for bling.

I chose not to polish the underside of the chamber that locks into the frame personally.
I don't know what to call that area, but I left it as is... even though it's doing a nice job of wearing off on its own anyway.

I don't know about you, but the only part of my car that I wax is the exterior, or whatever is prone to UV damage from the sun. Polishing is very different than waxing anyway; one removes surface material to make it smooth (shiny) and the other is a protective coating. |
