I actually prefer a revolver for the nightstand...

Right now, my nightstand gun is a Glock 32 -- with a 40S&W KKM barrel. Usually I've got it loaded with 357Sig, with the factory barrel -- but since i've been shooting 40 at the range -- I just didn't bother to change. It think it will do the job.
It's pretty much foolproof. -- Truglo TFO's, a nicely "worked " trigger -- smooth and easy. By the way, I voted for the Glock 23 |

XD-9SC AND XD-45 on the nightstand when I'm home with my girl.
XD-45 sitting at home with the girl and I'm at work. 'Nuff said.

The only 45 I have is a SA 1911 Milspec, but since I don't as much familiarity with it as I do with my XDSC9 (my daily carry), I keep the latter in my nightstand drawer.
All of kids have moved out, so the gun stays in the drawer, available if needed; I have no small gun safe to remove it from in a hurry. Hopefully off course, I never will have a need. I also keep my Surefire E2E with it. Plus, my home has a monitored security system. |

XD45 Tactical with rail light, loaded with 230gr Golden Sabers.
I also have the security system, in the form of Katie, my nosy (and vocal) black lab.

i use my XD .40 service w/ tac light (only b/c i don't have a .45).
Here's my thoughts on tac lights and why you should have them: 1) never hurts to have them, there may be situations when you want/need it 2) even if you DON'T use it, i think it'd help you from a legal standpoint. should you be forced to shoot an intruder and the prosecutor makes the argument you couldn't properly identify your target, you can say you used the tac light. only the dead guy can say whether or not you really used it. it's kind of a stretch but why take chances? |

If those were my only 3 choices...yeah, the XD45 for sure...even though I don't own one.
Why fool with a stubby grip or short barrel if you're in the house, right? Take the one with the longer sight radius, larger bullet and better grip. This is the place for a full-size gun with a longer barrel. Hell, even the XD45 Tactical would be great. My nightstand gun? Beretta 96F 40SW (loaded with Hornady TAP 180grainers) with night sights and the Surefire G2 right next to it (3-12 round mags in the drawer, too). Yeah, I have other guns and an XD-40, but the Beretta has night sites, a longer sight radius and handles recoil better because of its big size. - Brickboy240

I would make sure that the biggest gun thats hardest to conceal and most accurate would be the nightstand gun. People who choose these little sub-compacts are crazy. Your not concealing anything, bust out the bigger guns. I personally don't own any "big" guns but all are service size, XD-9, CZ P-01, G19, Kimber 1911 Pro Carry and so on. I do have smaller guns, IE Makarov, that I'd never bust out in a home self defense scenario.
Lately I've been thinking about picking up an HK USP in the .45ACP flavor, full size specifically for home defense for this very reason. I kind of want to get a tactical with threaded barrel to throw a suppressor on it too and try and save my hearing if I have to shoot indoors. |
