It depends what I'm doing. For Autocross and general running around (literally), I prefer my little FWD sedan. Nimble steering, rail-like handling, stops on a dime... quick pinpoint accuracy and responsiveness the second you need it (especially 'cause it's a manual) and very low center of gravity.

If I'm hauling stuff, plowing the driveway, or going on a trip somewhere and I need to bring a lot of things with me, a truck would be nice.

Drive a yellow '03 escape. Nice cargo room. I'd love a truck though. Diesel if possible. Nothing fancy. 4wd and ratty is just fine with me.

If I had the cash I'd build up a nice chassy with a good diesel and put an older style truck body on it. Something pre mid fifties.

With the right set of wheels and tires (tires especially), even a FWD sedan can get through a rough winter. The only part of a vehicle that makes contact with the road and has any bearing on how much traction you get is the tires! That's it. Most people don't realize that and immediately assume that for snow, you NEED an SUV. Not true at all.

If I lived in the boonies, I'd get an SUV. But around here I get along just fine in the winter with a set of WinterSport M3's on smaller, 16" rims. That's my winter set, and it works very very well. I am one of the only cars around here that can drive through unplowed streets with ease. In fact, I grin every time I pass by a stuck car

The critical thing, no matter what you drive, is to have the right wheel/tire combo. Small wheels and winter tires are crucial (make sure the tires are branded with the little Snowflake-on-a-Mountain symbol). All-Seasons will not cut it, and you will get stuck or lose traction and crash.

If at all possible, it helps to drive a stick. You can control the engine exactly and keep the RPM's low at all times to maintain the best traction possible.

RWD cars (ie, most muscle cars) are screwed regardless

Right. My car is RWD, 290HP, automatic (but with manual shift if desired) AND has performance Michelins on it. 0 for 3.5, I think you call it. Hence the Ranger.
