When I was young, probably 6 or 7, I was home alone with mommadukes.
We heard some creaking downstairs and knew it wasn't poppadukes as he was on a business trip. We both sleep upstairs. She comes into my room, grabs me and brings me into her room, locks the door and holds her .38 at the door, calls 911. 911 sends cops, they tell us they see footprints in the snow and that everyone's gone. Knowing what I know now, she wouldn't have hit **** if it came down to it, but it sure made me feel a whole lot safer as a young'n.

I voted 'no, but prepared...' since my experiences weren't the "home invasion" type attacks. I guess they happened too long ago & that tactic wasn't commonly being used.
Where I grew we had 3 occassions of folks trying to break in while someone was home. 2 times when I home (with family) and once when my sister was home alone. Once it involved a close call with our guns. My Dad and I went after the guy while he was trying get in a window. But he ran his fastest 100yd sprint and we didn't shoot since he was obviously no longer a threat. Seems he didn't care for me pointing a hunting rifle at him and my Dad with his .357. By the way, he knew we were home. So I'm guessing he had a plan for dealing with us. Fortunately our plan was executed better. |

now that the adrenaline has subsided....(update pg2)
Not sure I could claim it was benign, and not sure I could claim it saved my life. Every cop and lawyer I've chatted with since has claimed this would be a textbook self defense shoot had I squeezed a little harder. Either way, it opened my eyes.

no, definitely not stalking. I think I was just a target of opportunity. I've been told gypsies use the travelling salesman bit as cover to case a neighborhood for houses that might be worth breaking into. My guess is, it was something along those lines.

Unfortunately I qualify to answer.
I had a home invasion back in the 80s. Six or seven (never was able to get a full count) young men in various states of chemical enhancement came a knocking one fine Sunday evening. Perp number 1 came and knocked at the door while his buddies were around the corner where I couldn't see them. I open the door and after a brief discussion he pulls a chrome .32 or .38 out from a vest, shoves me in and his buddies come piling in behind him. My wife sees all this from the back of the house and tries to get out the back door but it is keylocked. Didn't make it out before the BGs got back to her. They stayed and visited us for about a half hour or so. Lessons learned and other ponderings: 1. The best weapon in the world is no good to you if it is 45 feet away when the SHTF. I had a loaded 870 in my bedroom. Didn't help me at all with the situation. 2. There are pivotal moments when you gain or lose the initiative. Once you have lost it, ending the situation in an acceptable way is much less likely. I can still see him pulling the gun out like it was in slo-mo. I think all I had to do was give him a quick shove in the right shoulder (he was cross-drawing) and he would have stumbled backwards, I slam the door and we would be done. Maybe fantasy, but its what I come back to. 3. Having someone beat you and then stuff the barrel of your loaded 870 in your mouth is not fun. 4. When they ask how to work the gun and you convince them that they need to push "that red button" in to put the gun on safe is kinda funny. 5. Not every invasion happens when you are asleep upstairs, hear the intruder stumbling around. They sometimes are very polite and knock at your door. An invasion can happen in any number of ways. 6. Obviously I still have firearms since I am on this post. I wear a holster with my XD around the house. This is better than I was right after the incident when I answered the door EVERY time with a Series 80 .45 held between the pages of a magazine. 7. Trust your instincts. My internal alarm went off when I first saw this guy but I figured I was just being unreasonable. You know what, I can be unreasonable now. Hope this helps. BTW my wife and I made it out OK. Three days later these pukes shot a young woman 5 times. Three were eventually caught, all juvies. Certified as adults and all pled out. Not sure if they are still doing time or not, but I doubt it.

I voted no, but a little over 12 years ago, I did have someone halfway through a window, and since I was asleep on the couch and he was between me and the gun cabinet, the only thing that I could grab was a very heavy wood table lamp that whapped him up the side and rear of his head hard enough to split the wood, and bend the little hollow metal tube that surrounds the wiring inside of the lamp.
If I'd had a chance to had been able to have gotten a gun instead of a lamp, he would've had a lot more than a concussion. As it happened, he fell back out the window, and he did get away while I was getting a gun out of the cabinet, but I found out from someone who he had told about it all a few days later that I had went to high school with the guy. When the cops got there they could tell that I was telling them the truth, but they never really done anything about it other than drive by my house for a few nights after that and by the time they did find him (about 6 months later) everything turned into a he said this, and he said that kind of thing. But he was caught a couple of years ago robbing a gas station and is doing 7-10 now in West Virginia from the last I heard about him.

Thomye-
sorry.... long weekend away. long story short, it involved a girl i'd had over for the night. her crazy ex showed up and barged into my house. i HAD always left the doors unlocked (very laid back suburban/rural setting). door to my bedroom opened, guy walks in w/ my two 80 lb dogs right behind him licking his hands. i was in bed, naked, with nothing to defend myself with other than an alarm clock. all he did was yell and curse. he eventually left without incident. huge eye opener for me. |
