Credit card fees -- how do you feel about them?

I had never seen credit card fees on an internet shopping site before shopping for guns, and it has made me curious how others feel. Most sites seem to build credit card fees (which usually cost 1.5% to 2.5% of a product's price in my experience) into their prices, which is what I'm used to.

How many of you benefit from sites with credit card fees separated?
Also, how many sites (in your experience) charge credit card fees? I've looked around, but I figured some may not show up until finishing a purchase.

I'm going to attempt to throw a poll on this, hopefully it works nicely.

I pay by card unless price dictates that they will add to it. Then its by cash!

We use electronic bill pay, which is a free service provided to our bank. A few days before the payment is due, our bank will write a check for the amount we have set up and send it directly to the payee for us.

I use credit card 99% of the time because if there is a problem, there is a way to dispute the charge / problem.... and sometimes there is extended warranty/return policies with a card.

Cash.... no way to dispute a bad transaction.

If there is a serious cash / check discount, and I trust the seller, I will use that form. (Not too often).

I've read that sending a check will make your gun take an extra week or two to ship. Does anyone know if this is true, and does the same thing happen with a money order?

This is true for most mail order shipping. They will wait for the check or money order to clear the bank and have the funds before shipping the final product. If I'm shopping on the internet I use CC because of the above mentioned recourse if you don't get or are unhappy with the product. I usually try to use cash with the local LGS's because they do discount for cash and that can usually mean an extra box or two of ammo.

Businesses have to be very careful with credit card fees. Our merchant agreement for accepting MC and VISA specifically prohibits the practice. You can lose your merchant account and the right to accept credit cards in the future if they catch you. It's simply not worth the risk.

It is also a good idea to check with your credit card issuer to see if fees are allowed and contest them on your bill if a company tries to upcharge you for using your credit card. The fees are just part of the cost of doing business. The companies don't have to accept credit cards if they aren't willing to play by the rules.

Visa USA regs (and 10 states) specifically disallow surcharges/fees for using a card.

However, the merchants are allowed to offer a "cash or check discount".

Same thing, but different.

I use my credit card for EVERYTHING and pay it off at the end of the month. Get the points. Actually cashed in 30,000 point for $300 VISA card and paid for all my PRP upgrades.

Interesting discussion.

I thought it wasn't legal for a business to collect a surcharge for using a card.
