Term Limits?

I've been reading a lot of political books lately and I have started thinking that term limits for the US Senate and Congress may be a decent idea. Rather than have some ass-wipe like Teddy Kennedy or John Kerry (the two biggest boobs I can think of right now) in office for 30+ years maybe we should replace them all on a regular basis. I'm thinking this will make them see their election as a responsibility rather than an end in itself. Kind of like getting rid of the "Ruling Class" as it were. I'm thinking that Senators should have 2 terms for 12 years and Congress should have 5 terms for 10 years. I'm also of the opinion that they should all be placed on normal Social Security like the rest of us and not recieve any special retirement benefits.

What do you think?

I think it would be a good idea. too often we have people who remain in office for far too long, and all they do is continue to screw things up. We need new and fresh leadership from time to time, otherwise we never progress.

Only risk you get with this, which is a concern to us is that a senator or congressman who is pro gun, is booted out at the end of his term limit and with the way so many people are turning anti-gun in this country you risk getting those morons getting in there easier.

I have read that the Senate was designed for more long-term politicians while the House was designed to have greater turnover.

Lobbyist have been around since day-one. Lobbyist are American; they push the needs of their constituents. The problem is not Lobbyists, but the elected officials that are swayed by the perks they offer.

I feel there needs to be term limits because I am tired of seeing the same faces and lack of new ideas.

IMO, Senators/Congressmen should have a minimum mandatory attendance record.

Politicians that wish to run for higher office should be required to resign their current post, rather than shirk the duty they were elected to do.

Why is it the Senate/Congress gets to vote for their own pay raises? Why do they make so damn much anyway? They should get public housing in Washington, paid travel expenses, and a modest income.

Also, the POTUS should only serve one 6-year term. They spend the better part of their first term campaining for the second term as it is.

I always have a hard time with this question, because there are already term limits -- 2 yrs House, 6 yrs Senate. Unfortunately, at the end of the term, they keep getting re-elected. Not bad if it is one of the few worth keeping around, not good for the most part.

People complain about them, but don't vote them out.

My favorite, and I can't think of the guys name now, was a Rep from Florida who pushed for term limits when he first ran. When his term would have expired, had a bill passed, he was asked if he was stepping down since his "limit" had passed. The answer, "No." I have work left to do. Hypocritical moron. Oh, and as I recall, he got reelected, though did finally get voted out.

You could change this to a Rebublican Senator from Montana that has been in the news lately, however the Democratic Senator isn't any better. State Senators & Representatives are limited but they usually just run for the other house so they still try to push their adgenda.

The only good thing is that a legislative session is only 90 days every 2 years then they have to go back to work for a living provided they haven't made a deal under the table.
