Hello Z..,

Shotgun here w/#4 buck ,with a saddle mount of slugs... Depending on design of ones home a shotgun makes a better defensive tool choice inside, and out on the perimeter given most past and present sub-division designed neighborhoods.

A shotgun allows you to carry at low mount when moving inside. Given its cone of fire its easily point shot under stress fire. #4 Buck /Turkey magnum.. Is a far better choice over DBL 00 buck, and sabots fly better than your standard slug. However, a hit with a slug or sabot will remove body-parts, and provide adequate ventilation.

IMHO, a large number of gun owners just don't have a battle rifle readily set up for CQB. But have many long guns they can effectively deploy for longer range 50+++, plus all tend to have a shotgun that they can easily set up for home defence.

Peace,
Talon

I've got 4 shotguns, all purchased as hunting arms. 3 of them have 20" or less barrels available to be fitted to them.

I'd even take my 30-30 to defend against multiple attackers in a post Katrina type situation.

First choice would be Fal or M1A loaded with 168gr bthp federal match.
second choice would be my ak with 40rd mags loaded with
some old chicom steel core rds I`ve been got stashed.
You did say "scare-factor"
Being realistic though a good remington or mossberg 12 gauge
in a defensive configuration loaded with appropriate ammo would
be a better choice at least at closer ranges.

When crap like this happens, you need to be able to travel fast & light to safer surroundings if the need arises. I didn't vote in this one, because I'd never want to get caught with just one. A better plan would be a pump shotgun and a full-power handgun.

The shotgun offers tremendous versatility with slugs & 00 buck from spitting distance to 100 yards, and a few #4 pheasant loads would go a long way toward turning a crowd of folks bent on doing you harm. And if you've never seen anybody that's been hit with a shotgun slug... I bet everybody standing around the guy you do hit with one will find business elsewhere immediately. Your shotgun needs a sling, so you can run/climb with it on you.

A good full power handgun can still be concealed, and since there is no dress code for emergencies your cover garment can be loaded down with spare mags & shotgun ammo. Keep your shells sorted to one side of your body- slugs in the right pockets, shot loads in the left, etc.

A good stout knife (I like the Cold Steel SRK) and a reliable flashlight round out the package, along with some stowed jerky/candy/trail mix and a canteen or good-sized water bottle. In addition to a MaxFire XL, I always carry a small clip-on LED light for times when you need a little light, but don't want to attract a lot of attention. Tuck some bootlaces or paracord in a pocket, along with a waterproof fire source. Get cold, wet & exhausted (and maybe hurt) sometime, and you'll trade 'your left one' for a fire to warm up next to.

This wasn't a hard list to make. This stuff goes to work with me every day in a Dillon's Concealed Carry Tote. If I'm off hunting, it goes in a daypack, substituting appropriate spare rifle ammo for the shotgun loads.

I've shot the AR-15 and it is an impresive weapon, but a shotgun sends a great message, plus the ammo is available in LARGE quantity. Just an afterthought, if I'm shooting at 8 different targets and want as many projectiles in the air as possible, use 00 buck 3"Magnum (9 .38 cal size pellets in each handy wrapped shell). This means I can put 72 projectiles in the air in less than 6 secs with a good pump gun. The only drawback is 3"Magnums kill at both ends!

it wouldnt matter what gun you HAD...............the goverment will come and take them from you and you will not be able to defend your self!...............Thats the sad and very scary fact of Katrina!

All of you who own firearms need to join the NRA! If you want to keep your right to have guns....Join the NRA.

that said I voted the shotgun.........cant beat it in a close struggle, wich if they are coming into your house they will be. The AR would be my second coice.........and the only time you use a hand gun is, to use it to fight your way to a long gun.

AR-15 for the capacity and speed in firing. With a shotgun vs 8 people, you'd better pump quickly and not miss once.

I put AR-15 but besides that I would have my AK and SKS just as loaded, along with my XD 38 revolver and even the 22 pistol. thats 90 rounds of rifle and 27 in pistols with no mag changes, plus i have holsters and slings for the pistols and rifles and I can carry all effectivly.
