Plain edge is my preference.

A well sharpened plain edge knife will cut most things worth cutting very efficiently and cleanly.

A serrated edge will cut as well, but it cuts very poorly compared to a sharp plain edge and makes a mess of whatever you're cutting.

Plus, if what your cutting is too tough for a plain edge knife, you should be using a completely different tool such as a saw.

I have owned and carried both types, plain and serrated... My conclusion is that you just cant beat the utility of the serrations

What are you cutting with the serrated edge that you cannot cut better with a sharp plain edge?

I use mine for wire and roap. Yes there are better tools but they are not alway as handy as my pocket knife. I cut alot of cardboard that would dull a blade within a couple days. I save my normal blade for other things where I need a very sharp tool.

See, this is why I carry a Leatherman. I have a wire cuter, a plain edge knife, a saw, a file, screwdrivers, scissors and a serrated edge knife. The plain edge knife is easily sharpened in a few short minutes a week and I always have the best tool for the job.

Thick zip ties comes to mind
you do have a good point thought a good palin edge will take care of most every thing. However, some of us (me) are not good at keeping a blade sharp
