so, who are the 10 idiots that think a .223 is good for most if not all NA game. There are plenty of wounded white tails running around with .223 wounds. forget about anything bigger!

Not that I would hunt bigger game with the .223. But its about shot placement. I know a Trooper who had to take down a bear with a .223 because that is all he had with him. Did a great job. Their are plenty of wounded animals with all calibers due to idiots shooting. Its the indian not the arrow.

Especially for a reloader, a 7mm Rem Mag is a solid choice. Flat shooting, with a high ballistic coefficient, it's a very accurate round. For varmits and deer, load it down to 7x57 levels or below.
I've made one shot kills on black bear at 20 yards and coati mundi at 400 yards without appreciable damage to meat or hides.
Having said that, if I were to get back into hunting I'd probably choose a 270.

People always throw around the "flat shooting" aspect for their favorite magnum round. But the truth of the matter is that with a 200 yard zero 95% of hunters can't shoot inside the difference in drop between that magnum and a 30/06.
7mm Magnum with 160 grain bullet has 6.3 inches of drop at 300 yards with a 200 yard zero.
30/06 with 180 grain bullet has 6.8" of drop at 300 yards with a 200 yard zero.
Perhaps 1% of all shooters can shoot that well. And not very many of them with a standard hunting rifle. Sad fact of the matter is that most hunting rifles don't have enough inherent accuracy to tell the difference.

I stand beside the 30-06...... you can find and load 110 grain for varmints all the way up to 220 grain for elk etc....... I like the 150 grain for white tail in my area..... I also have some 180 just for the hell of it....... it has stood the test of time and will continue to be handed down for many years to come...... I also like the 7mm mag but I can do anything with a 270 that I can with the 7mm mag with out the kick / recoil......... now one not listed is the 270 WSSM now that is one hell of a round...... but for me the 30-06 is it
