Question 9mm bullet choice for SD Poll

I'm trying to decide what grain round would best suit me in 9mm for my new xdm9. I have some 115gr Hornady Critical Defense rounds, however I'm going to get some Federal HST's in either 124gr +P or 147gr +P. I'm interested to see what the majority of people use for self defense in the 9mm.

Thank you for your vote and input.

Aaron

Not that I'd know from experience on a human being, and I pray to God I will never know, but with an XDm's 19+1 capacity and a lot of practice, I think 124gr +P will be more than enough for HD. Since I'd probably carry a SC for SD, I wouldn't get 19+1, but I don't imagine myself in a major gun war for SD...Speer Gold Dot JHP 124g +P should be fine, right?

The more important question should be which shoots better in your gun. Not all ammo shoots POA. What shoots fine for me may not shoot fine for you.

I fired some 115gr fmj and some old federal 135gr hp (1050fps). The 135gr and the 115gr were pretty much dead on with the heavier being just about perfect for my POA. I think either the 124gr or 147gr will be pretty much right on POA. I like the velocity numbers the 124gr +P puts up. However I'm not sure if there would be more expansion from a 147gr in a good hollow point or simply deeper pentration. Number are nice to think about but I think penetration and expansion count a little more than simply the numbers.

Speer Gold Dot 9mm 124g +P hits at about 324 FP at 50yds.

Speer Ammo - Ballistics Tables

I'm now looking into

Hornady 9MM LUGER 115 GR FTX CRITICAL DEFENSE

They are supposed to penetrate clothing well and expand consistently.

115gr are too light and will underpenetrate.

I currently have a box of 115gr FTX Critical defense rounds. Not much data out there on these yet and the *only* reason I purchased them was b/c that's all the shop had left when I bought my last 9mm. I just couldn't go home not having anything to stuff in it.

I really hope to get some HST's tomorrow....

Talking Double Tap

I will have to do some looking around. I've had a hard time finding any quality hp ammo lately.

After looking more at what double tap has to offer I think I"m just going to order from them. How many rounds you get for such high quality ammo seems to be a better deal than purchasing 20rnds of hst at a local store.

The 9mm +P 124gr Double Tap offers is just short of meeting the speed of the .357sig...

Caliber : 9mm+P

Bullet : Speer Gold Dot JHP

Ballistics : 124gr @ 1310fps / 473ft. lbs. from a G17.
124gr @ 1295fps / 462 ft. lbs. from a G19

Caliber : 9mm+P

Bullet : Speer Gold Dot JHP

Ballistics : 147gr @ 1135fps / 421ft. lbs. from a G17.
Glock 19 velocity - 1120fps.
