(AFP) -- Israel on Wednesday slammed a senior Vatican official for comparing the Gaza Strip to a "concentration camp," saying the comments were "based on Hamas propaganda."

"Making remarks that seem to be based on Hamas propaganda while ignoring its numerous crimes ... does not bring the people closer to truth and peace," foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told AFP.

Cardinal Renato Martino, the Vatican's justice and peace minister, was quoted by the online Italian daily Il Sussidiario as saying the conditions in Gaza "increasingly resemble a big concentration camp."

On Tuesday Pope Benedict XVI said he wanted to encourage efforts to get Israelis and Palestinians to sit down together in peace talks over the Gaza conflict. Benedict was speaking to pilgrims and tourists in St. Peter's Square.

The pope said he was following the news of the armed clashes in Gaza with "strong worry." He repeated his warning that hate and rejection of dialogue only lead to war.

Benedict added he is encouraging all efforts and initiatives by those who want peace, and who are trying to help Israelis and Palestinians to sit down and talk. The Vatican has said the pope would like to go the Holy Land on a pilgrimage this spring, but no concrete plans have been made.

When it comes to matters of war and peace, the Vatican generally is on the right side. At times like these, it makes me proud that I was raised in that faith.

It's almost universally accepted that Gaza is like a prison camp, and the Israelis are the guards.

And why is that Etta? Gaza has its own elected government in charge of making sure their citizens are taken care of. If they've failed to handle foreign affairs in such a manner that they can't provide necessary service, how is that Israel's fault?

That's because Israel has cut off supplies to Gaza as a form of punishment.

not just that. I saw something on tv last year, in Ireland well into the mid 1980s woman who has the nerve to develope to quickly were sent away to basically be slaves of the church in ireland. They used the term, over sexed, as in being a 9 year old girl with C cup boobs, or 11 year old with DD's and hips and the body of a woman, this got you a life in a dungeon, doing laundry, you had no money, no right, taken out of school. I think they were even raped. THIS ALL HAPPENED IN THE 1990S in a free Ireland, no a war zone, not POWS, these were private citizens born to married Irish catholics. Not street kids, not orphans, not run aways. Not that, that would make it better, just illustrates how weird and FAWKED up the leaders of the church are.

And yes the vatican knew of this for decades and did absolutely nothing.

Do you think the cardinal was around in the 80s? The detroit cardinal edmund shaka was ... he has been cardinal for as long as i knew what a cardinal was. I am willing to bet both the detroit cardinal, and the cardinal you refrence knew of this happening in Ireland and did absolutely nothing about it, and never spoke out one word on the matter.
