Depleted uranium is what is left over after the isotope fraction used for nuclear fission is removed; DU is less radioactive than naturally occuring uranium.

Sources which claim birth defects resulting from military use of depleted uranium should be looked at closely for accuracy and scientific methodology. Just like other "health risks" being trumpeted for anything to do with nuclear energy, these types of DU claims have great propaganda value. DU has been studied extensively:

Concerns have been raised that exposure to uranium particulate could have serious health problems including leukemia, cancers, and neurocognitive effects, as well as birth defects in the progeny of exposed veterans and civilians.

Marshall's study concluded that the reports of serious health risks from DU exposure are not supported by veteran medical statistics nor supported by his analysis.
Only a few U.S. veterans in vehicles accidentally struck by DU munitions are predicted to have inhaled sufficient quantities of DU particulate to incur any significant health risk. For these individuals, DU-related risks include the possibility of temporary kidney damage and about a 1 percent chance of fatal cancer....

Depleted uranium exposure should not increase cancer risk
30 July 2005
MORE than 14 years after the 1991 Gulf war ended, the majority of soldiers and civilians exposed to depleted uranium from anti-tank munitions can finally sleep a little easier. They are not at seriously increased risk of developing cancer, nor will their children have an inordinately high chance of birth defects, a two-year study by Sandia National Laboratories in the US has found.

Researchers calculated the amount of DU that would have been inhaled, ingested or become embedded under the skin of soldiers in tanks or involved in rescuing tank occupants, classified as Level 1 veterans, as well as civilians downwind of battlefields and children playing in contaminated vehicles. They then compared their predictions of the health effects with actual veteran medical statistics.

"Only a few Level 1 veterans inhaled sufficient quantities of DU to incur about a 1 per cent risk of radiation-induced lung cancer in addition to the risk for someone not exposed to DU," says Albert Marshall of the National Security Studies Department at Sandia. "Also these veterans may have experienced transient kidney damage. Health risks for Iraqi civilians are predicted to be very small, and claims of observable increases in leukaemia and birth defects from DU exposure are not supported by this study."

Depleted uranium has been the material of choice for anti-tank ammunition since the 1970s because of its high density and ability to self-sharpen on impact. An estimated 350 tonnes of it were fired at Iraqi tanks in the 1991 war.

Depleted Uranium Health Effects
Depleted uranium is not a significant health hazard unless it is taken into the body. External exposure to radiation from depleted uranium is generally not a major concern because the alpha particles emitted by its isotopes travel only a few centimeters in air or can be stopped by a sheet of paper. Also, the uranium-235 that remains in depleted uranium emits only a small amount of low-energy gamma radiation. However, if allowed to enter the body, depleted uranium, like natural uranium, has the potential for both chemical and radiological toxicity with the two important target organs being the kidneys and the lungs. The most likely pathways by which uranium could enter the body are ingestion and inhalation. The relative contribution of each pathway to the total uptake into the body depends on the physical and chemical nature of the uranium, as well as the level and duration of exposure.

No doubt inhalation is a risk. The DU studies were based on war time use. If the Israelis are using it, they would be using it the same way. Health risks are always dependent on both the toxin and the exposure.

Haven't seen any mention of WP... is it being used? For that matter, is DU being used by Israel?

There is commentary that both are being used, but more info needs to come out.

My baby brother is sitting at home now with damaged heart valves (all of them). He's on full military and SS disability from the firsr Gulf War. The doctor's say that DU was a possibility.

Yeah, and studies had shown that asbestos is harmless lead additive in paint/fuels were harmless too. No form of uranium is safe if man has had anything to do with it. Remember, asbestos is a natural product-till we mess with it....its funny how the studies were not conducted in the areas with the highest amount of particles per square meter, and the fact that on test ranges-some of our people have had 'strange' illnesses and birth complications/defects are a little more common with those individuals. When I was in Germany, you wore an NBC suit at minimum before you went anywhere around the ranges those rounds were fired on. And that was a Bundeswehr rule...

as a side note, remember agent orange?? it was studied to be harmless too....but the fact is, the study lasted 5 years, not the 15+ it took for the sign to show itself.

Desert warfare has always been conducted by armour...hell yes they are using it. AIr to ground is a mainstay of our doctrine, so it is for israel. You think anyone is honestly gonna step back and change the ammo because houses aren't armoured like tanks?? israel is bloddying the nose of Hamas, and regardless what anyone says, the civilians are paying the price...period. If israel was more concerned about 'just stopping the rockets', they would have taken the guerillia approach with SOG units. I know what the IDF can do, worked with them before...there is more to this than what you think...

Clergy were invited to the high ranks and associations of the **** regime in WWII. I don't think that is hard to criticize them, just as I don't think it is hard to criticize the SS for those same atrocities. There were many people complicit and active in that genocide. I won't give them a pass, because it was simply "in vogue" to be rabid sadists durring that time period. To me it was reflective of the oppression and genocide commited against any group that was considered heretical by the Catholic institution for centuries. A thing they have yet to be appologetic for. In fact, on DISH you can still watch them today recounting the heretical movements, their attempts to purge them, and the appologetics on how it was justifiable and proper. So, for a high ranking member of an organization responsible for the deaths and torture of people for centuries who has no remorse for those activities having the gall to criticize Israel is the heigth of absurdity.
