Just some idiot that wants to grab power, regardless of whether it is legal, desired by the constituents, desired by his peers.

Proves that he is more concerned about his own bottom line, than anything else. Glad they sent him packing.

It's really a shame that this has turned into a circus.

I don't like or trust politicans, especially Illinois, then Cook County, and eventually -- at the very bottom of the pit -- Chicago politicians, but Roland Burris is actually a decent guy... for a politician.

Burris served an honest term as state comptroller and as Illinois AG. He has no scandals, improper dealings or other skeletons. He's a decent guy who doesn't really like attention, which has me wondering why Blagojevich picked him (maybe because Blago had to pick what amounts to an "honest" IL pol, given Rod's predicament)... and it also has me wondering why Burris agreed, unless he truly wants to serve Illinois constituents. I don't see Burris with giant aspirations to greatness.

Jesse Jr was going to be the successor before the Blagojevich SHTF... and before this drama all plays out, might still end up the successor to the Obamameister. Burris would be the better man, IMO, for IL and Congress.

Given the situation Blago picked (arguably) the right guy, for the wrong reasons, and now Jesse White (an IL Dem tool) refuses to sign the Burris authorization, and Congress will stop an okay-to-good guy from serving to spite Blagojevich. We will end up with something worse (JJ Jr, or ***** Rush, or Emil Jones, or Danny Davis, or... ?) watch and see.

And, how much arm twisting is going on behind the scenes between Illinois pols, the Democrat Congress, and the POTUS-elect's Cabinet? Do you imagine Rahm Emanuel and Harry Reid are sitting idly by? Burris would be better for IL and the country than Jesse Sr's son IMO.

Yep, it is a shame that governor essentially tainted, if not ended, the career of Burris. The same scenario would have transpired regardless of who he picked. If he were smart (I know) he would have appointed a foe.

Reid is already lightening up and stating that "there's room to negotiate", even after he stated that "The Senate determines who sits in the Senate". Funny, I thought the Voters decided this. I assume that this negotiation would include Burris' promise not to run for the seat in 2010. Thier great fear has to be handing the seat to the Republicans the next cycle.

How about putting it up for referendum? Simple.

I agree.

The Dems were all for that at first, briefly, but then realized that they very likely would lose a seat and reversed course.

I don't see why they're in such a hurry to fill the seat. The last guy didn't do the job anyway. If it's vacant at least we aren't paying them to do nothing.

I'll throw a vote out for referendum as well. Let the people choose.

Why does it seem like the LAST thing they want to do is have the people choose?

Hmmm...isnt that how the founders intended us to pick our leaders?

I guess it really does not matter. Its Illinois....they're going to place a leftist hardliner of some sort in that seat...who cares who it is?

The state officials debated this and decided that things were soo bad with the dems that there was too much potential for electing a republican, so that idea was canned. God forbid that the citizens are fed up with the liberals running Chicago......
