Yes, Arnie's a reformer. He closed many public schools because of dismal performance...

and he moved the teachers to other schools...

The teachers union didn't like him... at first... but they've learned to play well in the giant sandbox that is CPS.

I love looking at my county tax bill which has risen 68% recently and 85% of that money goes directly to CPS to pass flunkies and gang members thru till graduation (if they don't drop out) and they can barely read nor can you understand them when they take your order at MickeyD's.

What about giving us the option of sending our kids elsewhere and giving us vouchers. I do not have children yet. When I do, their education will be the most important thing in MY LIFE. I certainly won't allow liberals like Arnie and his ilk decide how to teach my kids.

Home schooling looks better everyday...

Among Arne's reforms:
Quote:
Obama’s Choice for Education Secretary Approved Homosexual High School for Chicago
(CNSNews.com)
- Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan, nominated Tuesday to serve as President-elect Barack Obama's secretary of education, supported and approved plans for a special public high school for homosexuals. Social Justice High School, Pride Campus was one of several public schools that Duncan approved for Chicago. The school was supposed to open its doors to all students while offering support for homosexual and lesbian students and including notable gay and lesbian figures in its curriculum.
There is room for all under the rainbow-colored tent that is the Democrat Party!

Under Arne's leadership

Only 17% of 8th Graders Can Read at Grade Level in Would-Be Education Secretary's Chicago Public Schools
(CNSNews.com)
– In 2007, only 17 percent of eighth graders tested at or above grade level in reading in Chicago Public Schools -- the school system administered by Arne Duncan since 2001. “I'm also eager to apply some of the lessons we have learned here in Chicago to help school districts all across our country," Duncan said after being formally nominated as education secretary by President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday.
The Chicago Public School System at its finest.

And how do you really feel about yourself?

There are downsides to this approach as well but good on you if you're smart enough and well rounded enough to be able to teach things like algebra, trig, physics, chemistry, biology when the time comes to tackle those subjects.

No problem... the only downside I see is the "socialization" process that being in a classroom with other children teaches. I feel getting the kids into Boy's/Girl Scouts and various athletic teams should do the trick.

You can educate all of the children some of the time, and you can educate some of the children all of the time, but you simply can't educate all of the children all of the time.

Despite all the government programs, mandates, and trainloads of money burned in the ovens of public education, if there is no effort on the part of the students, it isn't going to work no matter how dedicated the teachers or "advanced" the methods. We're raising generations of entitlement-minded young people who expect to reap rewards with little to no effort expended in the process. With the "victim" mentality permeating our society, it's no wonder the U.S. is being surpassed by other nations (many of them poorer) in a multitude of areas, including education. This thing called a work ethic used to be passed down from generation to generation, but with the breakdown in the basic family structure (particularly in the inner city) these principles of living with honor and effort are short-circuiting.

You are correct. I work at a high school and I can pick out a home schooled kid in my first 30 seconds of interaction and it all revolves around social skills. And I'll be honest .... while home school kids have to meet state standards and might do very well on those tests what they do seem to have trouble with is discussing and dealing with conflicting ideas within a given subject.
