This weekend, I noted aggressive attempts by Team Obama to sign up college students and exploit lax residency rules in battleground Virginia. And last week, I blogged the latest ACORN attempts to infiltrate campuses.
The quest to capture the youth vote continues — by an overzealous college official who attempted to offer academic credits to students who canvass for Obama:
University of Massachusetts officials on Monday quashed efforts by an Amherst campus chaplain to offer two college credits to any student willing to campaign in New Hampshire this fall for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
Chaplain Kent Higgins told students in a Sept. 18 e-mail, “If you’re scared about the prospects for this election, you’re not alone. The most important way to make a difference in the outcome is to activate yourself. It would be just fine with (Republican candidate John) McCain if Obama supporters just think about helping, then sleep in and stay home between now and Election Day.” Higgins added that an unnamed “sponsor” in the university’s history department would offer a two-credit independent study for students willing to canvass—identify supporters—or volunteer on behalf of the Democratic nominee.
University officials disavowed the effort after inquiries Monday by The Associated Press. They said it could run afoul of state ethics laws banning on-the-job political activity, as well as university policy.
“We do not engage in or sponsor partisan political activity,” said Audrey Alstadt, chairwoman of the history department. “We certainly do not give academic credit for participation in partisan politics.”
Is it me, or does it seem that all voter registration efforts that seem to get caught up in scandal involve registering likely Democrat/Liberal voters?
I'm thinking specifically of all the shenanigans that ACORN seems to embroiled in.

You mean like buying Booze for homeless or having students register in their home state and the state that they are attending school in, or do you mean canvassing cemetaries for the recently dead so they can vote absenty before they die. I always find it funny when they tally the registered voters after a contested election and more people vote than are eligible to vote.
At the least "scandal involve registering likely Democrat/Liberal voters" is an item that is being brought about due to the actions of a desperate Democratic party.
While I am in favor of getting people involved in the election process ... When an educational institute offers credits if someone campaigns for one candidate in a preferential way ... I am appalled.
Once again, not that surprised. I don't agree with it, but I'm not surprised that it happened. That is the problem. Stuff like this is occurring more often, but nobody's surprised. I hope the 'professor' is disciplined for violating the ethics policy.
