Circle K stores accepting pesos | Bakersfield Now | News

A local convenience store is accepting currency from across the border.

Circle K Stores Inc. is accepting Mexican pesos. The chain has been accepting pesos at locations in Arizona for decades, Texas and New Mexico for about a year, and now Circle K officials are testing the service at stores in California.

Company officials say accepting Pesos has been successful and is a way of opening the market to all customers. Circle K charges a small percentage for the exchange rate it pays to its bank.

The company has established a rate of exchange of 11 pesos for every U.S. Dollar, but the rate is subject to change.

Customers will see signs in Circle K stores indicating whether that location accepts pesos. Change for merchandise purchased in pesos will be given in dollars.

Circle K officials are looking into accepting Canadian currency, and some stores in the eastern United States accept euros.

Pathetic... totally pathetic.

I can see it now. (The following is satire, not a prediction, please don't mistake the two. Obama and the Liberals are used as an example because it's the left that coddles illegals more.)

(Clip of Obama speaking) This new measure will help us identify with other nations by speaking what they speak only. This will make sure everybody loves us, doesn't attack us, and will call even all debts. We have no need for our military now, since our new language will now be our shield. ¡Viva Español!

Republicans are showing their opposition to this new law, as are the majority of the nation, as polls show, but they don't matter unless they agree with the DNC. Screw them. Back to you, Larry.

That being said, the day the Liberals tell me that I have to speak Spanish and accept foreign currency is the day I tell them, "Make me."

This is complete BS! So now American retailers are becoming banks for currency exchange? We all could quietly move to 7-11 or wherever but I think Circle K needs some emails and phone calls too.

My email to Circle K:

It has just come to my attention that Circle K accepts Pesos and other foreign currency. In light of your recent decision to continue and expand this practice I will not be patronizing your stores. There is only one currency acceptable in the US and that is the US dollar! I will be recommending to friends and family not to patronize Circle K. Your decision to accept foreign currency, in particular the Peso, is nothing more than pandering to illegal aliens. Oh thank Heaven for 7-11!

Well, considering that the dollar is starting to get comparable to the peso, I can't say I blame them. It probably costs more in exchange fees to get a dollar than the dollar itself is worth.

Accepting foreign currency is not all that radical. Just to offer a little personal history perspective re Canadian/US money:

Starting in the mid-70s I used to fish Northern Ontario... way out in bush country, northeast of Lake Nipigon. At that point in time, the Canadian dollar was slightly stronger than the US dollar (that changed in the late 70s and the American dollar remained stronger than the Canadian dollar up to this year).

All the Canadian shops, general stores, and beer stores accepted American currency, at a posted exchange rate. Note, the exchange rate these store owners posted did not match the "official" exchange rate published by the Federal Reserve, or the rate the banks used... they posted whatever they thought was equitable, and American currency usually took a bit of a hit. If the US dollar was worth $1.20 Canadian, they might give us $1.10 or $1.12 in Canadian value.

All change in the transaction was given in Canadian currency.

I guess my point is, that this type of thing is not radically new. My suspicion is that shop keepers in the Northern border states probably already - unofficially - accept Canadian currency, and treat the exchange rate a a profit opportunity, similar to the Canadian shop keepers I dealt with.

Ya know, seeing this pissed me off a lot more than expected. This is the United States, where we speak ENGLISH and pay with DOLLARS. I have no problem with immigrants coming here (legally), escaping whatever was plaguing them in their old countries, and earning a good living, but do not expect your new country to bend to YOUR ways.

NDB,
I know Champlin is a lot closer to Minneapolis than to the northern border, but do you know if shopkeepers in your area historically accept Canadian currency?
