The kiss of death for McCain...

... would be to pick John Lieberman as VP. (which has been talked about extensively)

GOPers and conservatives don't want a man further to the left then McCain on every issue aside from Nation Defense.

Joe Lieberman? I agree with you, but I'm not sure it would be a kiss of death. Who the heck are we supposed to vote for if not for McCain?

How about former Dem, now Independent, Joe Lieberman?

I think he'd pull dissatisfied\undecided "Dems" toward McCain with Joe Lieberman on the ticket.

But, I'd much rather see someone like Condi Rice or Bobby Jindal get the nod.

Liberman is WAY to liberal for me, and given McCain's age, i would have a hard time pulling the lever for him in november. He needs to put a solid conservative in the VP slot...

Bobby Jindal is on record as saying no to the VP slot this time around.

I'm not sure about Condi Rice's thoughts but would worry that a move like this would further tie McCain to Bush.

I tend to agree that Lieberman would be an OK choice, not great. I don't think this would send the serious Conservatives to Obama but it could have them just stay home out of protest.

I think Lieberman would put a nail in his coffin, unless he could get a mass to come over from the moderate left. McCain/Lieberman would keep a lot of voters on the right at home. Jindal and Rice have both given a firm "No" to the opportunity, at least in public. He is already on the border with a lot of the conservatives, and if he doesn't pick a solid conservative running mate I don't think he has a chance.

If Jindal and Rice are a no, then who would be good candidates? Not trying to be a smart*ss, but I'm having a tough time thinking of someone who would be a good conservative to counter-balance McCain, yet would not drive away undecideds and PO'ed Clinton Democrats.

Would a Mitt Romney do it? I don't think a Rudy Giuliani would work. Maybe the ever-exuberant (snicker) Fred Thompson? Alan Keyes? Huckabee? Duncan Hunter? Ron Paul would not work, he'd drive away centralist\undecided voters, IMO.

I'd really like to see someone like a Thomas Sowell or a Walter E. Williams.... but they are not politicians.

But I don't agree. I don't consider myself a hard core anything, but why would they stay home? As bad as Obama is shaping up for "hard core conservatives", I for one could not see conservatives staying home if a chimp was running on the Republican ticket.

Mind you I'm not saying the conservative base is thrilled with McCain, but look at the consequenses of a Obama victory. I would expect a larger turn out than for Bush.

I'm no fan of Lieberman either. I really don't know who would make a good VP for McCain. Of all of Bush's administration, I actually have a little respect for Rice. Shame she does not want the job.
