I don't. Do you know why? Because too many will use that money for booze. What I do, however, is offer to get some food for them from the nearest fast food place or grocery store. To this day, not one has taken me up on that offer.

What is the moral of the story? While there are many out there who need help, there are also many who want to abuse the help given to people. That money stolen from the successful is not only going to those who need help, but those who abuse the system, as a great deal has been in the past. Reform of the system is what is needed, not just more overall with the hopes to increase the amount of help given to those who need it.

Success should be rewarded, and laziness should be shunned, NOT the other way around.
No, I don't give money to these people. I think it's ridiculous. If they put as much effort into getting a job as they do into begging for money and collecting trash, they wouldn't need to beg for money! Granted, some of these people are just crazy.

Etta: The real issue is not that we believe people should suffer. It's just that wealth redistribution doesn't work. It hasn't worked -- ever.

Government and corruption go hand-in-hand. Bigger government means bigger corruption. The intentions and the actual RESULTS behind any given law are not always one-for-one-identical. Quite often, they end up yielding results directly opposite of the intention.

Not that it's a bad thing in principle, but tax policy that rewards investment creates more wealth for those at the top. Globalization also has put downward pressure on wages of the middle class in this country.

Then why are the Danes so happy?

That's the way it is in the U.S. Is it like that in Denmark or Norway? Are those leaders just as corrupt as ours? Or maybe their values are different than ours.

So then if you know it doesn't work on a small scale, how will redistribution of wealth will work on a national scale?

Did you know that some refuse to work because for them to get a job that pays more than welfare, it would require some of that effort you speak of? Or that someone can make more money panhandling than doing an honest day's work?

And what's your answer to this dilemma? Shall we reach out and try to grab the wealth of other country's citizens to help make the entire World "equitable" because some of our citizens have class envy?

The homeless get very little sympathy from me. Maybe I'm callous, but I see them as a blight on my community, and think the police should arrest them for vagrancy and trespassing. If they had a place to stay and were able to establish a residency, I doubt that many of them would take advantage of it because, you're right, they prefer their current lifestyle.

The wealth inequality that I'm concerned about is that separating working, middle class Americans from the wealthy.

let's not forget what a failure the war on poverty has been.
