Wind Generation in Texas

I am not sure if this was addressed, as I have been out of the loop lately. Sleep Deprivation and whatnot...

Texas metropolitan areas are going to receive wind generated power. The Texas Power Utility Commission gave a preliminary approval for construction of power transmission lines from West Texas to some of the more metro areas of the state, to the tune of 4.9 billion dollars. Of course, the consumer will have the opportunity to pay $3 or $4 a month to cover the cost, but that won't be added to the monthly bill till construction is complete.

The Associated Press: Texas approves major new wind power project

T. Boone Pickens at work here. This is his flagship project for his wind power movement. I'll be interested to see if it is in fact more economical or truly green.

We shall see about the economical as well as the green impact as it goes along I am sure. However, there is a fact that is evident now. SOMETHING is being done in the quest for an alternative source of energy instead of talking about it and then complaining about how its going to disturb the migration patterns of a bug. I am not sure you can say that about California. The land of ***** and moan and accomplish nothing.

Don't get me wrong, if it truly is economical or costs the same and gets us less dependent on foreign sources for energy, I'm all for it. Pickens is one of the few with the wallet and credentials to get something like this rolling for real.

I'll let you know in a couple of years when it in fact is producing power and see if my electrical bill looks better.

So what!!!

For those of you that do not believe in man made global warming, please be quiet about alternative green power.

We do not have a shortage of electricity. We burn more NG. We have plenty of coal. Nuclear is underutilized. Let me spell this out...

WIND POWER DOES NOT GET US OFF FOREIGN OIL.

Pickens plan does not get us off foreign oil. I want to see his numbers on how long America can sustain it's transportation on natural gas from AMERICAN wells. We have opened large fields in the West, but just like oil, global demand for natural gas has exploded. If Picken's plan to convert transportation to NG can sustain us for a while, then great, but we don't need wind power to do it. 20% is a reasonable figure, but I just want to make sure we are all on the same page... The Sun sets, and the wind dies. Just thought it needed to be said.

If you do not believe in MMGW, then wind power is a joke. We have plenty of coal. If you want cleaner air, invest in more environmental equipment, or build nukes. Just have the nut sack to do something with our current spent fuel inventory before you make a lot more. Reprocessing will be a much better alternative that building infrastructure for solar and wind and shipping it all over the country.

Here is something to ponder... what do you think will happen when there are a few large power arteries supplying power across the country and those get cut by attack.....

1. I was just relaying what the Texas Public Utility Commission has approved, and what WILL be happening.

2. Personally, I don't give a F where my power comes from just as long as I don't have to pay as much for it.

3. Geez, I didn;t mean to pinch such a nerve

You don't think Picken's "come to Jesus" monment on wind and getting away from oil has anything to do with his very large interest in this....do you?

T. Boone Pickens: Kicking Off the World’s Largest Wind Farm Earth2Tech

Looks like Mr. Pickens has a similar agenda as Al Gore: wanting to make big bank while appearing altruistic and green. Hmmmm...we have a pattern here...do we not?

In the end...are we not replacing one group of greedy capitalists (oil compaines) with another (the new green proponents)? Still...no guarantee that we can slow or stop the planet's warming.

The grist in this mill will be if the switch to wind is beneficial not only to the enviroment...but to average Americans. this is something we have yet to see the numbers on and better be careful of....or we'll wind up with another ehtanol like "solution" that we'll never get rid of.
