Scientists: Higher CO2 levels may be good....

Higher CO2 levels may be good for plants: German scientists

Quote:
The dangerous rise in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere may be troubling scientists and world leaders but it could prove to be a boon for plants, German researchers said Tuesday. Increasing exposure to carbon dioxide appears to boost crop yields, Hans-Joachim Weigel of the Johann Heinrich von Thuenen Institute for rural areas, forestry and fisheries in the central city of Brunswick told AFP.
"Output increased by about 10 percent for barley, beets and wheat" when the plants were subjected to higher levels of carbon dioxide, Weigel said.
The Thuenen Institute, which has been monitoring the phenomenon in fields since 1999, trains CO2 jets on the plants so the gas reaches 550 parts per million in the air around them -- the level expected in the atmosphere by 2050.
Weigel said the studies have indicated that while greater CO2 exposure appears to spur growth, it can also undermine the quality of the produce.
He said the next step in the study would be to evaluate the effect of higher temperatures on plant growth -- which scientists cite as another consequence of higher CO2 emissions in the atmosphere.
Weigel said that while the institute's findings may prove surprising to some, they are not intended to undermine the drive to slash CO2 emissions.
"This research is not intended as an argument for doing nothing to curb the rise of CO2 levels," he said. "It is to find out what the effects would be."
Other studies have presented a more mixed picture about the impact of higher CO2 levels on plants, and there is uncertainty about its effects on soil fertility and which plants benefit most from more CO2.
what the hell? i am told that CO2 is evil...how can it be good? so much for global warming unity in the scientific community...

Global warming? There are too many people who think humankind has a great affect on this big blue ball we live on. My own personal feeling is that mother earth WILL chew us up and spit us out like a fly on a horses ass. And a million years later aliens will land here and there will be no evidence of our past inhabitance. To think otherwise, to me, shows the ego of some people.

This is not an attempt to have anyone believe in some sort of way.

How exactly is this news? We have known for quite some time that increased CO2 increases yield. Ask any pot grower. The problem is it also increases carbonic acid and changes PHs. There is also doubts that the increase in yield from CO2 will not be offset by the decrease caused by higher temps.

I don't care about GW, but nobody needed a study to tell them increased CO2 increases yield. That has been established for a very long time. Proponents of GW can't give an accurate picture of what exactly will happen when all factors are added in on crop yields.

However, for you to post this as some sort of further proof that GW is good for us is a real head scratcher.

increased co2 only increases yield at a consistent quality of product if there are increases in other things involved in plant respiration...things like nutrients, sun/artificial light, humidity, etc.

in the op it says that while yeild increases, produce quality decreases...what it lacks is "all other things held equal." come on people! i learned this in dope growing 101...

You haven't been "told" anything. In fact, I'm pretty sure you only take into account those tid-bits of knowledge that seem to jive with your line of thinking.

There are two kinds of stupid in the world, those that are born that way and those that choose to be that way. Just something to think about.

Did you even read the article or did you just read the title? You just read the title, didn't you?

another one who cannot pick up sarcasm. the environmentalists run around claiming CO2 is the problem, then here come scientists who say is may actually be a good thing...so which is it?

one minute global warming is here, the next minute, it's taking a 10 year vacation, then it comes back and then goes away...it's all a frickin' joke.
