More and more of us are loving it every year. I was lucky to be raised by liberals who were good stewards of wildlife conservation. ie, hunted and owned many firearms. Others were not so lucky. They have to figure this stuff out on their own. The problem is liberals and conservatives alike are very stuborn. Me? I'm taking some of my fellow liberals out to the range 1 or 2 at a time. teaching them about gun safety and letting them kill the crap out of some paper bad men.

What really bothers me about the way Leftites pretend like it's all Bush's fault. They all imagine that he Congress wasn't complicit and cooperative with his authoritarian demands. They all imagine some fictitious world where Bush is the soul bearer of evil and that none of the House Representatives or Senators ever exercised their authority to help bring the abominations against civil liberties to pass.

Yes, the Military Commission Act was really stupid, and the Patriot Act was very frightening. But they never accept the fact that even their beloved BLUEASS party was complicit in both of those bills becoming law.

Just one year ago I was doing the same thing. It's what I encourage all liberals to do: educate yourself. Both the right and left are two sides of the same coin. They find different ways to control you. I am a long time advocate for free speech. But after being FOR gun control for many years I realized that my, "you either believe in free speech or you don't" argument could be made for the entire constitution.

This article pretty much highlights the same journey I took from a liberal gun control advocate to a moderate gun owner.

Great post!! I am sending it to my liberal gun grabbing friends.

The Daily Kos, I think I'll have to take a cold shower.

As mentioned earlier both parties are really two sides of the same coin. I think libertarian is closer to the right way (less the foriegn policy positions) but that move is going to take time.

True, the left often cheery picks the Constitution and SAYS they support it when it comes to censorship, freedom of expression and (on the whole) have disdain for the Second Ammendment.

However, we see with the left's support of items like the "Fairness Doctrine" that their support of all things free-speech can also have a twisted and different meaning. This is part and parcel of the left's "moral relativeness" approach to their lives.

The big question is....should the Democrats support the Second Ammendment, because they truly believe in its intention ... OR only because supporting the Second Ammendment will help them seem less "out there" and "anti-liberty" when it comes to winning elections? The very premise of firearms ownership flies in the face of the ideals of the Democratic left and seems very out of tune with many of their views.

We often see this great "run to the middle" by a Democratic candidate. Remember John Kerry's goose hunting photo-op or Obama's Memoral Day speech about having a relative that liberated Aushcwitz? A sudden change in gun ownership rights will be seen by many (including me) as another phony-baloney attempt to make these guys seem normal and just like average Americans...when they are truly not "one of us" at all.

Would a sudden 180 degree turn on their long standing disdain for the Second Ammendment truly be seen as genuine...or just another insincere attempt to see "not so leftist" to average Americans come election time?

THAT is the question.

Wow, really enjoyed that article. As has been mentioned, it ranks up there as one of the best explanations of the 2nd Amendment by ANY writer, Liberal or Conservative.
