Obama to Break Promise, Opt Out of Public Financing for General Election

Not that it is any surprize.

Political Punch

Quote:
In a web video to supporters -- "the people who built this movement from the bottom up" -- Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, announced this morning that he will not enter into the public financing system, despite a previous pledge to do so.

"We've made the decision not to participate in the public financing system for the general election," Obama says in the video, blaming it on the need to combat Republicans, saying "we face opponents who’ve become masters at gaming this broken system. John McCain’s campaign and the Republican National Committee are fueled by contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs. And we’ve already seen that he’s not going to stop the smears and attacks from his allies running so-called 527 groups, who will spend millions and millions of dollars in unlimited donations."
In November 2007, Obama answered "Yes" to Common Cause when asked "If you are nominated for President in 2008 and your major opponents agree to forgo private funding in the general election campaign, will you participate in the presidential public financing system?"
McCain said he would forgo private funding....Has even chalenged Obama to do the Same after Obama won the nomination.

Sure looks like Obama, is the same old politician all the rest are....

Here is what Obama said earlier this year
Quote:
Obama wrote: "In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election. My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce, return excess money from donors, and stay within the public financing system for the general election.
Here is another news link to it...

Obama bypasses public money — 1st since Watergate - Yahoo! News

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Barack Obama is abandoning public financing for his presidential campaign, reversing his earlier stance in bold certainty he can raise millions more on his own as the first major-party candidate to bypass the tax-checkoff system that was hurried into place after the Watergate scandal.

McCain told reporters in Minnesota on Thursday, "We will take public financing."
As for his opponent, he said Obama "said he would stick to his word. He didn't."

There's no question in my mind that the United States spends too much on the military - whatever they're spending it on!!

it's not a surprise when obama breaks a promise, it's a surprise when he keeps one.

Just one of many things to come where he will not do what he says. We better get used to it.

I'm more concerned that he will carry through on things he has said he would like to do....before becoming a candidate for the big office.

Good point, Judge!

Even the Liberal NY Times thinks he broke a promise.

I loved his rationale about the broken system the the Republicans will be exploiting. Did it just get broken in the last year and a half since he said he would enter said system if McCain did? He didn't promise, but did say it.

I gotta say this though, I don't think the Fed gov't has any business funding elections and I think McCain Feingold is of the debil....

So apart from Obama breaking his word, I support his action - BUT, BUT, I also realize he's not doing it out of principle (the more I see of him, the more I realize he has none) but of expediency - he thinks he can raise more money.... he would sell his soul and the nation to be President.

It's quite simple, really...
If you vote for Obama, you are a fu*king idiot.
If you vote for McCain, you are a fu*king idiot.
If your vote is for the lessor of two evils, then you can be comforted knowing that you're less of a fu*king idiot than the other guy!
