McCain's town-hall proposal rejected

Like anyone would be watching his during the July 4th weekend. I'm thinking Obama is afraid to debate with McCain in an open format, when people would actually be watching.

I sure hope this gets pushed to the public. Obama is smart, no doubt about it. But he's a serious WIMP to suggest this as an alternative.

McCain's town-hall proposal rejected

Saturday, June 14, 2008
WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Friday rejected Republican rival John McCain's proposal for 10 joint town-hall appearances, offering instead to have one on the July 4 holiday.

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said he offered to meet McCain in five joint appearances between now and the Nov. 4 election. One town-hall meeting, three traditional debates and an in-depth debate on foreign policy.

The McCain campaign said Obama's offer was to hold the single town hall on Independence Day, which likely would result in less attention because of the holiday. McCain called the Obama campaign's offer "a very disappointing response."

Obama cannot be seen w/o a teleprompter or cue cards. as we've seen before, he has no clue what he is talking about. The youthful, vibrant obama will be schools by "the old man"

Unbelievable...what a wuss. Seriously, this guy knows what he holds in his cards and so does McCain. Obama wants to play the hand on his terms and doesn't want to look foolish (obviously), but seriously, everyone who has seen Obama attempt to put a complete thought together and express that thought without the help of someone else should see right through this attempt to hide behind a national holiday where TV does not get much attention.

I knew Obama wouldn't step up. McCain would crush Obama in a town hall setting. Without teleprompters, in a real debate about real issues, he would crumble.

as long as obama keeps away from debates w/ McCain, it increases his chances. He will be schooled no matter what and he cannot afford to have his supporters see what a true waste of a vote he'd be.

Unless it's a speech where he can speak in platitudes, we wont see much of him. Issues and substance will be avoided totally this election. If he does do a debate, it may be fun to watch.

And when he looses, the media will claim its because he is black and the questions were unfair.

Smoke'm out Johnny Mac!

I hope McCain holds the line. It would be great to see BHO trip all over himself.

Guys, they don't use teleprompts for debates. That's why you always see the candidates scribbling down notes when the other candidate is speaking. They are coming up with their reponse for their rebutal.

McCain is as stiff as they come. Even more than Bobdole. He needs all the help he can get. That's why he fears debating in a traditional format. He doesn't want to be seen stiff as the podium that he is standing behind.

No kidding. They say he is such a good public speaker but I find that to be the case only when he has a teleprompter or is at a rally where he is not being questioned.
When he and Hillary went at it in their debates, it seemed to me that she won every one.

AZ is correct...

Obama has continuously refused to engage McCain in a town-hall format.

Instead, his campaign proposes using the "Lincoln-douglas" style of debate, where each candidate makes mini-speeches. These kinds of debates last for ours and there is no real debate. Each candidate makes a mini-speech about each issue; it is more of a conversational forum. Obama would have an advantage here because he would be talking instead of debating and that is his strong suit. He performed poorly in the democrat debates, so I can see why he is doing this.

I think McCain would crush him in a town-hall setting. That is how McCain revived his campaign; he started doing dozens and dozens of town-hall meetings in NH, where he interacted with voters and answered questions.
