Yes, but it might not be noticeable to everyone.

Marathon oil has been in the process of expanding it's existing refinery in Louisiana and should be online by end of 09'. This was a $3billion plus dolllar expansion that will make it the largest and most efficient and high tech refinery in the country. Should double it's production capabilities. Marathon is a good stock to own, fyi.

There is also another new refinery in Port Arthur, TX that Shell has built. The thing has been tied up in courts over permitting and other nonsense. They also had to fight the Green Mafia every step of the way.
The Shell refinery was started almost a decade ago. My Dad did alot of the inspection work on many of the vessels in that plant...back in the mid 90s. Right now...its pretty much ready to go...sitting tied up in legal nonsense. Nice, huh? Not Shell's fault...they'd LOVE to open it up and give you cheaper gas but big govt and the court system have stalled it. (one reason why I laugh at the grilling the Shell CEO got from Congress...what a friggin joke!) There is also alot of talk about tapping the huge find in the Dakotas and finally doing something about Chevron's huge find in the Gulf (before the Cubans...with the help from the Chinese get to it - and they're close). We've known about these things for 10-15 years or more. My cousins that work for Exxon Exploration have told me that the find in the Dakotas is possibly larger than any in Saudi Arabia and is very much like the Saudi Light Sweet Crude in that it is low sulphur and thin. Not nearly as hard to refine as the thick, vicscous stuff we currently get from Mexico and the Alberta Canada tar sands. They told me about this find back in the early 1990s. This is all going to take time, but I really think that as the economy grinds to a halt over fuel prices...things WILL change. They will HAVE to or we will sink as a nation. We might also see alot of this "green" stuff like ethanol and 34 different boutique gas blends go out the window. Ditto for the low sulphur diesel that is causing all sort of problems in diesel engines. All because this stuff is wrecking our economy and the people are getting tired of it. Not exactly the way I wanted the greens to go down...but hey...I'll take it. - Brickboy240

I wished I shared the optimism of Brickboy, but alas I can't. I am sure the treehugger crowd as a whole are wetting themselves in excitement over people limiting thier driving and turning in thier SUVs for toy cars. They don't care what the economic reprecussions are as long as the evil cars are turned in and off the road for good. More people are using public transportation where it is available and that is making the above mentioned crowd just giddy. They are just loving this. Increasing pressure from the climate change bunch will only result in more restrictions whether we like it or not. Gas did its little dance after Katrina and then back down a little, but never to what it was before. I think we might see some fluctuation back down a bit, but it will never be what it was before this latest surge in price. I think they treehugger crowd is gaining more and more political momentum that we may never recover from. As I said elsewhere, the price of gasoline is just the tip of the iceberg. Anything that is made using oil in anyway will continue to go up in price to a point it will become too cost prohibitive for alot of people to even think about running to the store and picking up.
My nutso pessimistic rant is over now.

Well, I am going to see the glass as half full.
Sure, we may never see a buck-fifty a gallon or be albe to drive Suburbans all the time for the rest of our lives, but there is already a backlash against the greens. People (especially in this state) really don't like having to give up their big cars...or their cars period. They're alreadypaying high taxes and are stretched out. The idea that the Greens are causing this is goign to send a backlash against these types. Most people I talk to (not just oil employees) are sick and tired of all the green take over. Especially since they can be tied to the high price of just about everything today. People are growing tired of it....they're not seeing the benefits of this and are offended by the green's thinking THEY will contol our behavior with high gas prices. The backlash is coming...becaue in this already stressed economy...the people won't stand for it. It might get worse before it gets better - we might see 5 bucks a gallon...BUT...there WILL come a tipping point when we collectively say "we have had enough of this green mumbo jumbo...its killing us" and the revolution against this nonsense will begin. Have faith...it is coming. - Brickboy240

A little off topic but in regards to the back lash against the "greenies" ... we just had a county commissioner election a while back. One of the candidates was part of a greeny organization. All it took was for that to become common knowledge and the guy never had a chance. There didn't need to be any negative campaigning against him. People in my neck of the woods are absolutely sick to death of every timber sale being taken to court and tied up for years. I can only hope that Brickboy is right in that backlash is or will soon be in the works for the greenies.
Isn't it ironic that those who say our presence in the Middle East inflames the tensions and yet they're actions keep the country dependent on the very part of the world that they say we should be getting out of? |
