but the war on drugs fixed that right? just like the war on terror fixed that problem? or the war on poverty eliminated (or even really reduced, compared to the immense cost) homelessness/destitution?

Heck if AQ wants nuclear weapons, I say we just share ours. We'd never miss a couple of them and we could drop them over whatever rat's nest they happen to be infesting say, next Wednesday? I vote for lighting them up at about 500 feet.

Not likely to get any takers, even from countries that hate the U.S.

The most likely "nuclear" device to be used by a terrorist is a "dirty bomb", where nuclear material is dispersed using conventional explosives. Widespread death from a dirty bomb is not certain, and depending on the quality of the nuclear material used, may be much ado about nothing. If detonated in a large city, the nuclear material would likely be concentrated in the area of the blast since high buildings would limit dispersal. Anyone upwind would be safe. It is likely that the conventional explosive would kill more people than the nuclear material. The anxiety associated with a dirty bomb event would likely be blown way out of proportion.
