Not the way to foster trust -- Police Beating (PA)

I'm not sure if this made it out of the Delaware Valley, but in case you wonder why there is so much distrust with the Philadelphia police department (and hesitation to cooperate with the police) this may help explain it.

Nutter: Police Beating Video 'Absolutely Shows Inappropriate Behavior' - Local News Story - WCAU | Philadelphia

Quote:
Mayor Michael Nutter said the behavior of police officers shown in television footage kicking, punching and beating three suspects during a traffic stop was "not acceptable" and will be dealt with directly."It absolutely shows inappropriate behavior," Nutter said Thursday on national television.

"The officers will be dealt with directly and appropriately.

"One police sergeant and five officers were removed from street duty Wednesday as authorities investigated the footage. More than a dozen officers were involved, and Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said investigators were having the videotape enhanced to try to determine how many were actually striking the suspects. Police were relaying information to the district attorney's office to determine if charges are warranted.

. . . Liczbinski [police officer] was shot with an assault rifle Saturday after a robbery in the city's Port Richmond section. One man was fatally shot by police soon after, another was arrested Sunday and a third was captured late Wednesday.
Hard to convince people that the police are the good guys when this stuff happens.

On a related note, the anti-gunners are already using these shootings and subsequent police brutality to further their anti-gun cause.

The city council will certainly use the publicity of this news story to hammer away for more gun control since the officer was shot with an
'assault rifle' (iirc, an AK47 variant).

I don't know enough about the particulars of this incident, but I do hope that whatever footage exists, that ALL the footage will be shown.

I recall that the Rodney King video was edited to show only the portion of the tape when Mr. King was being beaten, and not the police efforts to secure King and his behavior and actions resisting arrest.

I tried searching, briefly, but I was unable to find info on the specific weapon used.

The media was saying that it was an AK-47, but you know how they are... if it functions similarly and uses the same ammo the names may as well be interchangable.

i.e. AR15 and M16.

oops... sorry, I didn't see sks. the media said AK-47 on the radio.

You can watch the video on the website, it's from a police or news chopper.

It doesn't appear that the officers were just trying to subdue an unruly suspect like the King beating.

Hmmm, Rodney King, Kalifornia, Philadelphia cops, hmmmm, NY cops. We Southerners sure do mistreat our African-American citizens, don't we, compared to the "more civilized" areas of the country??

Well, I know that nothing that can be said will change the fact that police should not act that way. Period. That is just the fact of reality.

However, this urban $hit that we have flourishing in our society needs to be dealt with harshly. Period. They have no respect for the law. They play by their own rules. They are scum. As far as I am concerned, the activity that we are seeing in the urban areas these days amounts to nothing less than guerilla warfare. Their activity has been cited by mayors of these big cities as one of the main reasons that they want to enact harsher gun control on a federal level. Their actions are directly affecting me

If I had my way, we would run up-armored Hummers through the hood, and machine gun the street corners after 10:00 p.m.

I have no remorse for these idiots.

I don't feel bad for the 'victims', but I do hate that the police flew off then handle when they apprehended them.

The last thing we need is short fused cops that lose cases because they attacked the suspect.

Is it really THAT hard NOT to get beaten by the police?

From the Rodney King incident to this one...am I the only one that thinks these types of beatings are very avoidable?

Probably so.

Yeah, probably.

Follow these steps.

1) don't commit crimes
2) don't flee police
3) don't get beaten
